Gerald Merckel

Jerry Merckel is the Associate Dean of the College of Computing Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Florida. Dr. Merckel is also a Professor in Electrical Engineering. Activities involve teaching, research and serving as Interim Chair of the Department of Building Construction Management. Research activities include Internet based Location Based Services with a focus on real time data capture including GPS spatial position information.

Dr. Merckel has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida, an MS in Nuclear Engineering from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, an MS in Engineering Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in Engineering Science form the University of Tennessee.

In his 26 years at IBM, he had a wide variety of product development assignments in both hardware and software. These efforts were directed at the IBM mini computer and personal computer product lines. Prior to leaving IBM to participate in a high tech business startup, he was the Program Director responsible for the development of new multimedia features for the IBM PC family. Prior to IBM, Dr. Merckel was with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and participated in research associated with advanced converter nuclear reactors.

Dr. Merckel is a Senior Member of the IEEE, recently served as the Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Elements, serves as an accreditation reviewer for computer science and has multiple IBM Invention Achievement Awards.
