The Good

Import customers template:

The majority of top ecommerce software allow you to import and export customer information into the customer database. Shopify makes the importing process extra easy by providing a customer import template. The template is a CSV file that has all the necessary fields outlined. If you already have a large number of customers, this resource can allow you to save time and avoid data entry errors.

Point of Sale system:

In addition to offering high-quality tools and resources for online sales, Shopify is one of few platforms that provides access to a Point of Sale (POS) system. Without a POS, merchants who want to operate an online store and a brick-and-mortar shop often have to keep track of two different inventories, product catalogs, and payments systems. The Shopify POS and ecommerce systems operate on the same platform, allowing updates to be made instantly across both platforms. The POS system can also be used for processing credit cards, a huge plus for those that sell at farmers markets or other local venues. Shopify's Point of Sale system has a lot to offer, and is worth looking into further.

Built-in blogging capabilities:

Blogging can be a great way to advertise new products by creating unique content related to your business, which can drive traffic to your website. Unfortunately, not all of the top ecommerce software products provide blogging capabilities. Shopify has a Blogs & Pages option on the main menu that enables you to easily create and manage a blog. For those that value blogging capabilities, Shopify may be the right ecommerce solution.

Comprehensive third party integration:

Shopify provides access to a wide variety of third party integration options, making it easy to add new functionality to your online store. All of the top ecommerce products offer some integration options, but of Shopify is the only one that provides access to every integration option. With easy access to so many applications, you can be confident that the tool or feature you are looking for, can be added to your online store.

Well-organized theme and app stores:

Most of the top ecommerce software will provide access to different website themes and other add-on applications. Both of these features can be important aspects of a successful online store. However, it doesn't matter how many themes or apps you have access to if it's difficult to find. The themes on Shopify are cleanly designed, easy to browse, and provide multiple searching and filtering options, making it easy to find the solution you're looking for.

Extensive support center:

Depending on your technical aptitude, it can take a little bit of time to get comfortable with ecommerce software. Shopify provides a thorough Support Center with hundreds of articles to help minimize the learning curve and troubleshoot common problems. For those that may feel like they'll need a little extra guidance, a support center like this can be a great resource.

The Bad

No product comparison capabilities:

It's becoming increasingly common for retail website to provide product comparison functionality. For any customer trying to decide between two or three different products, a comparison tool can be a great asset. Many of the top ecommerce software products provide some form of comparison capabilities, however, Shopify currently does not. If a product comparison feature is particularly important to you, Shopify may not be the best fit.

No social media registration and sign-in:

Some of the top ecommerce software allows customers to register and sign in to the online store using social media credentials. Although registration forms are typically not overly burdensome, it is convenient to be able to skip that process if it will increase sales conversions by making life easy on your customers. Similarly, with so many different accounts being created, remembering usernames and passwords can be difficult. With social media integration, customers can register and sign in using information from common social media websites.

Missing one page checkout:

Shopify does not provide a one page checkout option. Not every online store manager is convinced that a one-page checkout is the way to go, but having the ability to test multiple checkout options would be a superior option. If you are convinced you need a one-page checkout for your customers, Shopify might be an ecommerce solution to avoid.
