The Good

Solid user reviews

When making a big purchase like an elliptical trainer, it is a good idea to read some user reviews of the product from sites like or User reviews can be extremely helpful because they can alert you to issues you may not have known about and they can help with questions you can’t find the answers to in the specs. Users of the Precor EFX 5.23 were pretty happy with the machine, rating it above a 4.0 on They have commented on how smooth the ride is, the great resistance range, and the overall quality of the machine. Seeing comments like this can help you feel confident that the machine you are getting is exactly what you’re expecting.

Good selection of workout programs

The Precor EFX 5.23 comes with a good selection of workout programs, including heart rate, interval, and weight loss programs. The weight loss programs can be very helpful if you are looking to slim down, and the heart rate workouts are great for improving your cardiovascular fitness. If these are your goals, the Precor EFX 5.23 may be just the right machine to help you meet them.

Great warranties

Warranties are great because they can save you a lot of money. If your elliptical breaks while under warranty, you don’t have to worry about paying to fix it. The Precor EFX 5.23 has some really solid warranties, including a lifetime frame warranty and five-year electronics and parts warranties. If you are particularly concerned about equipment breakdowns, the Precor EFX 5.23 may be able to put your mind at ease.

Locking pin

The Precor EFX 5.23 has a locking pin, an especially nice feature that locks the elliptical pedals in place until the pin is removed again. This can really help keep children from getting injured if they try to play on the machine. Though it is a small feature, it can play a big role in keeping you and your family safer and therefore, is something that you should consider when making your final decision.

The Bad

Missing console features

An elliptical’s console can play a significant part in how easy and comfortable the machine is to use. Unfortunately, the Precor EFX 5.23’s console is missing a few key pieces. There is no reading rack, which is a very convenient feature for those who enjoy reading while exercising, and there is no built-in console fan. This feature can make using an elliptical a much more comfortable experience and, as a console fan is commonly found on most treadmills and ellipticals today, it will probably be missed by many people.

Very pricey

The Precor EFX 5.23 is a little on the expensive side, so those interested in a budget elliptical will want to cross this one off their lists. This machine also does not have free shipping — a common offering among elliptical manufacturers. Instead, there is a flat fee for delivery and assembly. While it is nice that the company assembles your machine for you, some would much rather have the machine shipped to their front door for free and assemble it themselves, and it would be nice to see Precor provide this option to its customers that want it.

Lacking entertainment options

Entertainment features are not crucial to the operation of any elliptical. However, many machines do come with a built-in audio port and speakers for listening to music. The Precor EFX 5.23 does not provide these features, nor does it provide a reading rack which can be very helpful to those who enjoy reading during their workout. This is somewhat shocking given the high price tag attached to this machine and the fact that even some budget ellipticals offer these features. If entertainment features are particularly important to you, it may be a good idea to consider a different company.

No transport wheels

At some point during your ownership of your elliptical, you may wish to move it from one place to another. This is difficult at the best of times as ellipticals are very heavy. Precor doesn’t make this process any easier for you since the EFX 5.23 does not have transport wheels on its frame. Before purchasing this machine, you must think carefully about whether or not this will be a problem for you in the future.

Low weight limit

Some ellipticals are tested to hold 400 pounds of user weight, a sign of a very durable machine. The Precor EFX 5.23, however, is only designed for 250 pounds. While this will not be a significant concern for everyone, it is still something that is important to be aware of when choosing the best elliptical for home use.
