Schwinn 420 Review

The Schwinn 420 is a budget-friendly elliptical with lots of nice features, including a strong console and even a built-in audio port. The warranties and onboard programs fall a little short of the best in the industry, but the Schwinn 420 may still be the right fit for some people.

The Good

Low price

If you're on a tight budget, you may think that finding a good elliptical machine is impossible. The Schwinn 420 just might surprise you, though. This machine has an easy-to-use console, strong entertainment features, and a quality display screen, all for a price that should fit nicely into most people's budgets. If price is your primary concern when shopping for an elliptical machine, the Schwinn 420 is definitely worth your consideration.

Strong console and display

The console is one of the most important parts of the elliptical because it is what allows you to control your workouts. Though missing a chest pulse sensor, the Schwinn 420 has an otherwise strong console, including a quick start button, built-in cooling fan and a rack for resting reading material or a tablet on during the workout. This machine also has a strong display screen which displays calories burned, speed, total distance, and workout time, among other things. With all these features, you shouldn't have any problem feeling in control of your workout.

Solid entertainment features

Having access to entertainment features can make a big difference in how motivated you are to use your elliptical in the first place. Most budget ellipticals do not offer these features, but the Schwinn 420 is one of the few that does. This machine comes with a built-in audio port and speakers, which can make listening to music or an audiobook while exercising much easier. If you are looking for an elliptical on a budget and think you might need that little something extra to get you motivated to use the machine, the Schwinn 420 is a great option.

The Bad

No incline ability

For those who are hoping to purchase an elliptical that inclines for the added challenge it brings to workouts, the Schwinn 420 won't be a good fit. This machine doesn't have this capability. Though this may be a dealbreaker for some, others may not care about the incline feature. In this case, the Schwinn 420 may still be the right choice.

Limited warranties

The Schwinn 420's warranties are far behind the best in the industry. Many of the best ellipticals offer lifetime frame warranties, but with the Schwinn 420, this protection runs out after a few years. Other warranties are similarly short with the electronics warranty lasting only a year and the parts and labor warranty ending after just 90 days. It is up to each person to decide how much warranty protection they feel they need to be comfortable purchasing an elliptical, and the Schwinn 420's warranties just may not be enough for some people.

Missing some onboard programs

In addition to the manual mode, the Schwinn 420 also has interval workout programs, though it does not have any additional onboard programs beyond that. This is rather disappointing since workout programs can help to vary your exercise routine and make using the elliptical a little more enjoyable. If having access to a lot of different programs is important to you, you may be better off choosing a different machine.

No option for in-home assembly

If the idea of assembling an elliptical all on your own scares you, then the Schwinn 420 is definitely not the machine for you. Unlike most other elliptical manufacturers, Schwinn does not offer the option of in-home delivery and assembly. While this may not be a big concern for some, it may be a big turnoff for others, and so it is important to keep this information in mind when you are shopping for an elliptical machine.
