iContact Review

iContact is a well-designed email marketing software with a great selection of campaign management and design tools. Pricing is competitive, but email marketers that create image-heavy campaigns should be prepared to pay extra.

Access to a strategic advisor

If you decide to join iContact as a premier account customer, you get access to a great assistance program that pairs you with an email marketing expert whose job is to help you take full advantage of your marketing opportunities. This is a great service for customers that don’t have the time to research the finer points of email marketing or to sit down and develop a strategic marketing plan themselves. Your iContact strategic advisor researches your business in advance in order to come prepared with ideas and strategies you can use to promote your business effectively. You also get personalized training on virtually every aspect of the iContact system. If you want to branch out into email marketing but aren’t sure you can do it alone, this program is well worth considering.

Solid tools and resources for large senders

High-volume senders have different needs than smaller businesses. iContact provides the tools and support to make sure large operations effectively market their products to their thousands of recipients. First, you get a designated strategic advisor to help you evaluate your campaign strategy, email designs, and reporting options. Next, you get access to advanced email marketing tools, such as contact segmentation and A/B split testing, so you can target customers with the most effective messages. Finally, your campaigns are delivered with iContact’s ultra-dependable infrastructure to ensure your emails are sent out on time, every time.

Diverse integration options

Integration with other online business services can really add efficiency and power to an email marketing platform, providing access to data across different business functions and simplifying common tasks. iContact excels in this area, offering a variety of tools to integrate your email campaigns with popular customer management, ecommerce, and analytics services. The list of supported services is extensive, including Salesforce, 123ContactForm, Viewbix, and UltraCart, to name a few. You can even build your own integration tools using the iContact API, a flexible programming interface that provides access to a variety of powerful functions.

Strong resources to help improve your marketing knowledge

Whether you’re just beginning or have been designing email campaigns for years, you’re sure to find user guides, video tutorials, webinar courses, and in-depth articles to help you advance your capabilities and take your marketing to the next level. And what’s more, all these great materials are easily searchable in the iContact resources and help sections.

The Bad

Missing some contact importing options

Unlike some other companies that offer a variety of flexible tools for importing contacts, iContact only accepts data stored in a couple different spreadsheet formats. If you’re lucky enough to have your contacts stored in a tidy XLS or CSV file, or if you know how to convert your contacts into one of these file formats, you shouldn’t have any trouble at all getting your data into the iContact system. However, if your contacts are stored in another file format, in an online customer management database, or in your email account, you won’t get much help from iContact, which can be pretty annoying if you don’t happen to be a database expert. These limitations are a little surprising given how well iContact performs in other technical areas of email marketing, and it would be nice to see the company offer a little more flexibility to customers in this area.

Image library limited to 5MB free space

In order to add your own logos and images to your email campaigns, you have to host the files in the iContact system. Although the company provides five megabytes of free storage space, this is really not enough to meet the needs of users who send out regular email campaigns, especially if your campaigns feature product image galleries, staff photos, and customized graphics. Although you can upgrade your account to get more storage, this adds to your monthly costs. For example, to upgrade to a 10MB image library, you’re charged an additional 10% on top of your regular monthly fee. For 25 megabytes of storage space, you pay 20% extra. If you do plan to insert your own images into your campaigns, it’s important to consider this factor when comparing costs for different email marketing services.
