Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike Review

The Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike has a dual-pedal design that's relatively uncommon among consumer exercise bikes. While more expensive than many standard recumbent bikes on the market, the Stamina® Elite's special design makes it an appealing purchase for interested buyers.

The Good

Dual-pedal design

The Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike has both traditional foot pedals and hand pedals, a combination matched by just a few recumbent bikes on the market. While the foot pedals deliver a terrific cardiovascular workout and lower-body toning, the hand pedals target muscles in your arms, shoulders, and back while providing yet more cardiovascular exercise. This dual-pedal design makes a great option for virtually anyone, but especially for those who need a way to get a quality, low-impact upper-body workout. It’s important to note the mechanical resistance only engages one set of pedals at a time. In other words, if you’re working the foot pedals, you won’t get any resistance with the hand pedals, and vice versa.

Eight selectable resistance levels

The Stamina® Elite’s magnetic resistance system provides eight levels of cycling difficulty to help you push yourself. Change your resistance level using an easy-turn dial on top of the peddle assembly at any time before or during a workout. Mid-workout resistance transitions are smooth and immediate, unlike some exercise machines that lose resistance for a moment before reengaging at a higher or lower level. Although this bike doesn’t provide any automated resistance adjustment capabilities, changes can be made by hand with little effort.

Comfortable seat with adjustable-angle seatback

While many exercise bikes on the market get poor reviews when it comes to seating, the Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike is one that gets a lot of positive reviews in this area. The bike offers an easy lever-adjusted seat with plenty of cushioning for most users. Somewhat rare among consumer recumbent bikes, the Stamina® Elite seatback angle is adjustable to improve seat fit and comfort even further. If you have several riders in your home with different heights and body types, you’re sure to appreciate the seating flexibility this bike delivers.

The Bad

No preprogrammed workout routines

The Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike does not offer any automated resistance adjustment capabilities, an omission that sets it apart from some other exercise bikes on the market. For example, many exercise bikes offer preprogrammed workout routines designed to mimic mountain roads, sprint courses, and hilly parks, which are accessible at the push of a button. These automated routines enable you to focus on your cycling without worrying about working a resistance dial by hand whenever you’re ready for a change in difficulty. Although these types of preprogrammed routines are not essential to a good workout and won’t severely limit your enjoyment of the Stamina® Elite, they’re a convenient option to have at hand, particularly for extra-serious bikers.

Warranty could be better

The Stamina® Elite’s warranty leaves something to be desired when you compare it to other popular recumbent exercise bikes on the market. This bike has a five-year frame warranty and a one-year parts warranty but offers no labor coverage. While these warranty terms are decent and provide you with good protection against failures in craftsmanship and materials, they do fall behind warranty terms offered by competitors. Even some bikes sold at half the price of the Stamina® Elite offer longer, more complete warranties. For example, the Horizon Fitness RC30 Recumbent Bike delivers a lifetime frame warranty, a 20-year brake system warranty, and a one-year parts and labor warranty.

Limited display screen

Although the Stamina® Elite Total Body Recumbent Bike does monitor your workout time, current speed, distance traveled, calories burned, and heart rate in real time, the display screen is only capable of showing one of the five statistics at a time, which you select by pushing a button on the console. Most exercise bikes in the same price range as the Stamina® Elite utilize larger displays with the ability to show six or even eight different workout statistics continuously on the screen. This is pretty convenient, as it enables you to monitor all your workout stats at a glance. The Stamina® Elite monitor does have a scan function, which automatically shows each of the five statistics in turn. In this way, you don’t have to hit any selection buttons, you just have to wait a while for the scan function to complete a cycle in order to see each statistic.
