Kaplan Review

Kaplan has long held a place near the top of the industry thanks to their comprehensive LSAT courses and adaptive technology. Plus, their ever-growing collection of online workshops is making it easier than ever to get a quality education no matter where you are.

The Good

Additional hours of live workshops

Kaplan’s LSAT Channel, found in your online account, contains videos from hundreds of workshops led by some of the company’s best instructors. You don’t have to pay extra to access these, and all the previous workshops are recorded and saved in an on-demand video library for later viewing. These live workshops function like a live online course where you’re able to interact with the instructor and ask questions about things you don’t understand. All sorts of topics are covered in these video sessions, from the most basic strategies to the most difficult Logic Games problems. These resources are extremely valuable for reinforcing key ideas and giving you extra practice in the areas you need it most, so the LSAT Channel is definitely something you should take advantage of.

Adaptive reporting technology for effective studying

After you take one of Kaplan’s LSAT practice tests, you receive a Smart Report™ detailing how well you performed on each section of the exam, broken down by question type. You then get recommendations about what lessons and practice questions you should focus on. You don’t have to follow these recommendations if you don’t want to, but they do give you an idea on the best course of action to pursue if you want to raise your overall LSAT score. After each new practice test you take, a new Smart Report™ is generated so you’re always up to speed on your progress.

Private tutoring included in classroom courses

Students in Kaplan’s in-person or live online AdvantagePlus courses may sign up for three hours of private tutoring at no additional cost. You speak to a Kaplan LSAT instructor who helps you come up with a study plan tailored to your needs and schedule. If you want, you can also go over past practice tests and look at specific problems that gave you trouble. If you decide you’re interested in more private tutoring after your three hours are up, there’s always the option to add on more for additional hourly fees. Tutoring is a great way to make sure you’re getting the individual attention you want, so it’s worth considering the upgrade from the traditional Advantage courses to the AdvantagePlus plan.

Extra practice on certain sections

In addition to their traditional and on-demand courses, Kaplan offers supplementary courses that focus solely on one section of the LSAT. These courses include over 15 hours of streaming video lessons and hundreds of practice problems. If you’re struggling with one particular section of the test, it’s definitely a good idea to check out the supplementary course for that section. Because the lessons are on demand, you can take the course whenever you want. Fit in the video lessons around your full-length prep course or take it after you’ve finished. These supplementary courses are also a cost-effective alternative if you only need help with one particular section and don’t feel like investing in a traditional prep course.

Backed by strong guarantees

If you don’t see any improvement in your LSAT score after completing one of Kaplan’s prep courses, you have the option to either retake the course or get your money back. For those students who haven’t taken the LSAT prior to enrolling in a prep course, score improvement is calculated from your first practice test. If you’re not satisfied with your score, even after if you’ve improved, you’re welcome to take the course over again. Same goes for students who complete a Kaplan LSAT prep course and don’t feel prepared enough to take the actual exam. These guarantees show Kaplan really stands behind their products. Few other companies offer these types of satisfaction guarantees to their customers so, if you’re interested, you should take a closer look at Kaplan.

The Bad

Slightly larger class sizes

Kaplan caps its LSAT prep courses at about 20 to 30 students per class. This is somewhat larger than the class sizes found with other companies like The Princeton Review and Manhattan Review, who usually maintain a student-to-teacher ratio of about 8:1. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to have difficulty getting one-one-one attention from your instructor. Kaplan still offers a large number of in-class hours and live online workshops, giving you plenty of time to get your questions answered. And, if you’re still worried, it might be worth it to upgrade to Kaplan’s AdvantagePlus plan, which offers the same instruction as the Advantage courses in addition to three hours of private tutoring.
