Test Prep NY Review
Test Prep NY offers group courses and one-on-one tutoring options focused only on the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT. Comprehensive MCAT prep courses are not available.
Specialized verbal reasoning courses
The verbal reasoning section of the MCAT is considered by many students to be the most challenging of the MCAT sections. Test Prep NY offers both on-site and online courses covering verbal reasoning content and test strategies, as well as in-person and online tutoring options to provide you with personalized help. On-site courses are available in New York City and San Francisco. Standard on-site and online group courses both include 13 hours of live instruction and three diagnostic verbal reasoning tests. A one-on-one, 11-hour private course is available. You can also opt to combine the group course and the one-on-one course at a reduced overall tuition cost.
Unique learning materials
If you enroll in Test Prep NY’s unique verbal reasoning MCAT course, you receive the Verbal Reasoning Intensive Coursebook, which provides everything you need to master Test Prep NY’s verbal reasoning methods and strategies. You also get a copy of the company’s MCAT Full Potential audio program on CD. This program is designed to help you relax for better performance during your study sessions and on test day. Both the book and the audio CD are provided free with course tuition, or they can be purchased separately from Test Prep NY.
Full selection of admissions prep services
Test Prep NY offers reduced-price admission prep services in a partnership with the admissions advising firm, AdmissionsConsultants. Get expert assistance developing your medical school admissions strategy, completing your applications and personal essays, and preparing for admissions interviews. All services are provided online using real-time audio-video communication tools.
No full-length practice tests available
Since Test Prep NY courses focus on just one section of the MCAT test, it’s not altogether surprising that the company doesn’t offer any full-length practice tests like most other MCAT prep companies do. However, full-length practice tests are pretty important to the test preparation process so it’s important to be aware that you won’t have access to this kind of practice material as a Test Prep NY student. You do get three verbal reasoning diagnostic tests as part of the company’s standard course, however. If you decide on a Test Prep NY course, you should consider purchasing some third-party practice tests to make sure you’re properly prepared for the unique challenges of a full-length proctored test that lasts more than four hours.
No performance guarantees
Test Prep NY makes no promises to students when it comes to MCAT test scores or verbal reasoning section scores. The best companies in this area, such as Kaplan and The Princeton Review, offer a guaranteed tuition refund if you don’t show any improvement in your MCAT score after completing all the requirements of your prep course. Kaplan and The Princeton Review, among other companies, also provide students with the opportunity to retake a complete course at no charge for any reason. While the fact that Test Prep NY lacks performance guarantees doesn’t rank as a major criticism, it would be nice to see the company match its competitors in this area.
