Columbus State University Review
Columbus State University's online programs are relatively young, but they have a growing catalogue of reputable online degrees.
Columbus State University (CSU) has earned three different rankings in the most recent U.S. News & World Report for online education. The school’s online graduate programs have especially high rankings with the online graduate business program ranking number 46, and the online graduate education program ranking at number 67. Additionally, the online bachelor’s program received a ranking at 189, which is not as high by comparison but is still an accomplishment considering more than 800 online colleges were surveyed to compile the rankings.
Good variety of degree options
There are a variety of online bachelor’s and master’s degrees offered at CSU. At the undergraduate level there are six different majors to choose from, two of which are offered at an accelerated pace. Whether you are interested in a particular degree or are completely undecided on a major, CSU has a range of options as general as liberal arts, and as specific as nursing and criminal justice. If you’re looking for a graduate degree, Columbus State offers programs in computer science, education, nursing, public administration, and business.
Accelerated bachelor's degree options
Two of the online bachelor’s degree majors are offered at an accelerated pace which CSU calls a Degreein3 program. Through Degreein3, you can complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in communications or criminal justice in just three years. Both of these degree options can be completed fully online, and U.S. students are provided with a laptop computer on loan. Earning an accredited and respected four-year degree at a faster pace not only saves you time, but it also cuts down on your tuition and fees expenses.
Online availability varies by state
Due to federal regulations, some online degree programs from Columbus State University are not offered in every state. If you live outside of Georgia, you should double-check that where you live is currently on the list of approved states. In addition, some programs are limited in certain locations due to off-line class components such as internship, externship, clinical, mentorship, or other field experiences. For example, online nursing and education degrees almost always require a practical, off-line component in order to gain real-world experience, but not every state has a site for online CSU students to fulfill these kinds of requirements.
Few start date possibilities
All campus-based and online classes follow a semester schedule with a fall semester beginning in August and finishing in December, and a spring semester that runs from January to May. While most majors allow you to enter the program year round, there are really only fall, spring, and sometimes summer entry points. Many of other online colleges offer five or six different academic terms, which means there are a variety of potential start dates for new students. A school like CSU that follows the traditional semester schedule offers less flexibility for online students.
Columbus State University is part of the University System of Georgia, but it is smaller and lesser known than its larger, flagship state school counterparts. The school does distinguish itself as a top online school, having earned favorable rankings from U.S. News & World Report, but it does not have much else in terms of awards, rankings, or national recognition.
