North Carolina State University Review
North Carolina State University has created a unique distance learning environment by leveraging more than 10 years of online education experience. Bachelor's degrees are available, but several high-ranking graduate programs are NC State's major draw.
Multiple high-ranking graduate programs:
With more than 10 years of online education experience, North Carolina State University has established several reputable online graduate programs. In fact, NC State has four different programs ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report, including two programs in the top ten. Perhaps most notable is the online graduate engineering program, which offers more than 10 different degree options and is one of the best in the nation. Other graduate degree programs are not far behind, making NC State one of the leading academic institutions for online graduate degrees.
Access to large networking community:
North Carolina State University provides a number of ways for students to get and stay connected. In addition to to career services and an active alumni association, the school has a respectable online presence of 15,000+ North Carolina State University group members on LinkedIn, as well as a Facebook page. Networking can be particularly useful when it comes to finding a job after graduation and the online community built around NC State can be a major asset.
Easy online application process:
Almost every school has an online application option, but many are confusing and difficult to navigate. North Carolina State University has a simple online application process that utilizes clean forms and a good menu system. Once you create a basic account, you are guided step-by-step through the necessary information pages. A menu on the left clearly displays what tasks you have completed, where you are in the overall process, and what steps you still need to address. Links to important documents can also be found in the menu, as well as an option to print any necessary forms.
Distance learning website makes research easy:
NC State has a great website to help distance learners find information about the school. Conducting preliminary research is an important part of finding the right online program, and unfortunately, the websites of many of the top online universities don’t make conducting research easy. In addition to an intuitive and easy to browse interface, NC State provides an apply-and-enroll quick guide and even a virtual orientation to help you get a clear picture of what you can expect.
Graduate degree tuition is on the higher end:
Although the tuition rates for North Carolina State bachelor’s programs are fairly competitive, costs for graduate degrees are higher than many competitor schools, especially if you are not a North Carolina resident. NC State provides a variety of financial aid options, and they have also received positive recognition from both the U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, so you can take satisfaction knowing that you are getting a high-quality education. But if finding a low-cost graduate degree is a priority, you may want to look to an alternative school.
Student services not up to par with top schools:
Although local students can take advantage of the tutorial center on campus, one potential drawback for online students is the absence of online tutoring. Many of the top schools provide online tutoring for their students, and if you lack confidence in certain subjects, knowing you can reach out for help online is a great benefit. Another service offered by many competitor schools is 24/7 tech support, a service which NC State does not currently offer. If your preference or circumstances require you to be online during late hours, 24/7 tech support may be something you miss.
