Norwich University Review
Norwich University is the oldest private military college in the United States, offering several graduate degree options and an impressive partnership network with dozens of organizations around the globe.
Excellent national rankings:
Four online program areas at Norwich University are recognized in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings for online education. The online bachelor’s degree program, online graduate nursing program, and online engineering program each are ranked within the top 75 of their respective categories. Additionally, the online graduate business program, which offers an online MBA degree, is ranked within the top 60, or top 30% of online business programs. Such high rankings across all program areas should reassure you that Norwich University offers a consistent level of quality online education and that they certainly earn a place among the best online colleges.
Many online master's degrees:
Norwich University offers nine different online master’s degrees in highly popular and in-demand fields. Some of the current online degree options include a master’s of arts in history, nursing, and civil engineering; an MBA, and newer offerings such as a master’s in information security and assurance. The online master’s programs offered at Norwich typically have very small class sizes, allowing you to receive personalized instruction. Additionally, if you or your spouse graduated from Norwich with a bachelor’s, you can receive a scholarship for any master’s degree program.
Long-running online program:
The first online master’s program at Norwich University was established in the late 1990s, making the school an early adopter of online education. The online bachelor’s program was founded later, in 2009, but the school’s overall longevity and experience with online education is a mark of quality. Some other online colleges have only recently been established to capitalize on the growing demand for online education, but this is not the case with Norwich University. The school is a small, remotely located university, and the online education delivery model allows them to extend their academic offerings beyond their small corner of the country.
High-quality network of partner organizations:
There are hundreds of partnerships between Norwich University and professional organizations that allow for tuition discounts and professional development at the master’s degree level. Any employee or member of the hundreds of affiliated organizations located around the world can offset the cost of an advanced degree or certificate at Norwich University. You need to check the list of partnerships to be sure if your company or organization is included, but the school’s network is quite impressive.
High acceptance rates:
The acceptance rates for all of the online programs at Norwich University run quite high, meaning they accept almost anyone who applies. For example, the online MBA program and the online bachelor’s programs at Norwich University have reported acceptance rates of 93% and 89%, respectively. The online nursing program is slightly more selective with a reported 83% acceptance rate. You may view easy admission as a positive, but schools that admit the majority of applicants are not selective, exclusive, or concerned with building a strong student body. An online school that shows some discretion in who they admit is a quality to look for, instead of an “easy in.
Very few bachelor's degree options:
Norwich University only offers two online bachelor’s degrees, which are a bachelor’s of science in criminal justice and a bachelor’s of science in strategic studies and defense analysis. Both of these two majors are fairly specialized, so if you are looking for general studies or another broad subject area to major in, you need to consider a different online school. Only offering two online bachelor’s degree options is certainly limiting, but it is an improvement since the school just recently added the criminal justice major. As Norwich University continues to expand its online offerings, there will hopefully be more undergraduate majors to choose from, but for now the choices are limited.
Weeklong residency requirement:
For online master’s degree students, you are required to attend a weeklong campus session in June, while online bachelor’s degree students are encouraged but not required to attend. The weeklong residency session takes place at the end of your Norwich education, to cap off your academic experience. It is meant to be a great way to connect in-person with classmates and instructors, but it can be a bothersome travel requirement for some. If you are a bachelor’s student, you are not forced to attend, but as a graduate student you need to designate a week of your time for this degree requirement.
