Old Dominion University Review
Old Dominion University is based in Norfolk, Virginia, and offers one of the largest selections of online bachelor's, master's, and PhD degree programs in the nation.
Many programs at every degree level:
Old Dominion University has one of the largest offerings of online degrees compared to any single online college. At the undergraduate level, there are 17 different bachelor’s degree options. There are also 24 different graduate degree options with program areas such as nursing, education, and engineering. Finally, there are also six different PhD options which can be earned entirely online. This is a rare offering in the world of online education. Additionally, Old Dominion’s online programs have received recognition from U.S. News & World Report, marking the school as a leader in online education.
Distance learning partnerships:
Old Dominion has a variety of partnerships with community colleges, military bases, and learning institutions around the country. Through a strong partnership with the Virginia Community College System, if you earn an associate’s degree through any of the 20+ schools in the system, and earn minimum course grades of C, you can be guaranteed acceptance into ODU. The school also has 40 different extended campus locations in the states of Virginia, Arizona, and Washington. You can study at any distance learning site and take classes in-person, and still earn your official degree from ODU’s main campus in Virginia.
Very military friendly:
ODU is consistently recognized as one of the top military friendly schools, and their online course offerings are especially convenient for active military members who may be located anywhere in the world. ODU offers programs that are designed for military members to take anywhere, including ships at sea, and certain ODU programs award significant transfer credits for military training and experience. Aside from tuition assistance for military members and veterans, the school also awards scholarships that can be applied directly towards tuition for military members who were injured or disabled while serving.
Several Old Dominion programs earned respectable marks in the last U.S. News & World Report online education rankings. The online graduate nursing program earned ODU’s highest marks, ranking 24th of more than 100 online nursing programs. Other notable rankings include the online graduate education program at 42, and the online bachelor’s coming in at 69. Hundreds of online schools are surveyed in order to compile the U.S. News & World Report rankings, so while not all of these rankings are category leaders, overall it is notable that ODU earned rankings across every program type that they offer.
Lacks a strong reputation:
ODU has been offering distance education courses since 1994, the early days of online education, but their longevity in the field has not yielded the most notable reputation. The university itself did not make Forbes’ America’s Top Colleges list, or The Princeton Review’s Best 378 Colleges of 2014. The online school does have substantial enrollment numbers and a sizeable social networking presence, so the alumni may provide some perks. But when compared to some of the other leading online schools, ODU’s reputation still has room for improvement.
High tuition outside of Virginia:
The school is a public university based in Norfolk, Virginia, which means residents of the state of Virginia can take advantage of some fairly reasonable tuition, however the rates are much higher for non residents. Tuition rates are different at the undergraduate and graduate level, and for out-of-state students the tuition rates are several times what Virginia residents pay. Charging different rates for in-state and out-of-state tuition is a fairly common practice among public schools, but the difference in these rates at ODU is particularly high, and may result in high costs if you live out-of-state.
