University of Bridgeport Review
The University of Bridgeport is a private school located on the Gold Coast of Connecticut with highly ranked bachelor's and graduate programs. Degree offerings are limited, but the accelerated pace is appealing to people working while in school.
Bachelor's program ranked in the top 30:
The University of Bridgeport has the number 29 ranked online bachelor’s degree program according to the latest U.S. News & World Report online college rankings. The online school offers two different bachelor’s degree majors, which include dental hygiene and general studies. The general studies program offers a very broad and flexible curriculum that leaves room for you to build your own custom, interdisciplinary degree. Additionally, the general studies major allows for a number of free electives, which means if you have any previous college credits you likely can transfer them towards your University of Bridgeport degree. Also, the online bachelor’s program also boasts high retention and graduation rates, which is a sign that students are successful in the program.
Top-ranked online graduate programs:
The online computer science degree and technical management programs at the University of Bridgeport are both recognized in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings with fairly high rankings placing them in the top 20. The U.S. News & World Report metrics show that the University of Bridgeport’s online engineering and information technology graduate degrees have by far the highest score for faculty credentials and training. Online students at the University of Bridgeport can expect to receive high-quality and personalized instruction from experienced faculty.
Accelerated class schedules:
The class schedules for many online degree programs at the University of Bridgeport are offered at an eight-week accelerated pace. The accelerated schedule allows students to work towards their online degree at a full-time pace while also leaving room for a professional work schedule. Typically, each online course demands 5-10 hours of your time per week to do readings, discussions, exams, and assignments. All online courses are asynchronous, meaning you never have to be logged on at any specific time, and you can access all course materials and complete class assignments at your own convenience.
Interactive online orientation:
Enrolling as a new student at a new school almost always requires you to attend an orientation session of some kind, and at the University of Bridgeport you can attend orientation online rather than having to travel to campus for a face-to-face session like you do with some online schools. The online orientation is meant to help newcomers to online learning become more comfortable with all course management tools, find course readings and assignments, and even get access to the electronic library and other school-wide resources. Orientation is one week before you begin your first online class so there is plenty of time for you to get acquainted.
Reputation has room to improve:
The University of Bridgeport is a small, private school and therefore is lesser known. Outside of the online specific rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report, the school has not received any significant recognition for its online or on-campus programs. The University of Bridgeport has an 86-year campus history and has been offering online classes since 1997, and even though certain programs have received positive rankings, the university as a whole still has work to do.
Not every degree is entirely online:
The technology management graduate degree is considered a blended degree in that it is not entirely online and does require some on-campus classes. There are also a few other online degrees that can be completed entirely online, but require an on-campus comprehensive exam at the end of the degree. Comprehensive exams are needed for dental hygienist and human nutrition degrees, for example, and they typically are offered once in the spring and once in the fall. On-campus requirements vary by degree and may only be minimal, but keep in mind that travel to campus might be necessary and may be inconvenient if you do not live on the East Coast.
