University of West Georgia Review
The University of West Georgia is part of the public University System of Georgia. Well-ranked, advanced degrees are available, but some services are geared mostly towards Georgia residents.
Multiple well-ranked programs:
The University of West Georgia (UWG) had several programs receive respectable rankings for online education in the most recent U.S. News & World Report. The school earned recognition for five different programs including their online bachelor’s degree, and four different online graduate degrees. The university itself is regularly recognized by The Princeton Review as one of the one of the Best Southeastern Colleges and one of the best overall bargains. Consistent praise and awards like these illustrate that the school is dedicated to high-quality education.
Access to many advanced degrees:
The majority of online degrees offered through UWG are master’s degrees. Even though UWG does not provide access to as many degrees as some online schools, the degrees they do offer are a careful selection of highly popular, in-demand fields. Some of these degrees include an MBA, as well as master’s degrees in education, nursing, and computer science.
eCore credits program helps new freshmen:
The eCore option at the University of West Georgia is designed for first-time undergraduate students who are part of the University System of Georgia. Through eCore, you can complete the first two years of your bachelor’s degrees in an online environment, before starting your degree-specific coursework. Every eCore course is taught entirely online, but an occasional proctored exam may be required. Incoming freshmen may appreciate the benefits of the eCore program, as it offers flexibility, convenience, and high transferability of course credit.
Visiting student status:
A visiting, or transient student, is a student who wants to take a limited number of online courses through the University of West Georgia for one semester only. UWG is one of the few online colleges to offer this unique student status, and it can allow you to pick up a few needed credits in an online setting, and then return to your regular college of enrollment. Take note that a visiting student cannot be on any type of academic probation or suspension at a previous college. This option is ideal if you are looking for a flexible way to take an online course over a summer semester or in tandem with your regular school schedule, but you do not want to become a full-time UWG student.
Only one major in bachelor's program:
The online bachelor’s program at UWG only offers one choice of major in criminology. The only other online bachelor’s offering is to take your first two years’ worth of credits with the eCore option, and then transfer those credits to a full degree program at another college. Many online colleges have limited choices in bachelor’s degrees, but UWG has one of the smallest selections of any top online bachelor’s program.
Favors Georgia residents:
Several student services and resources are available to online students only if you also happen to be a resident of Georgia. For example, if you are an online student and a Georgia resident, you have access to any University System of Georgia library service including a statewide virtual library. Additionally, the eCore online coursework is intended for state residents. These are great perks if you happen to live in Georgia, but if you live anywhere else your academic benefits are limited.
