The Good

Top-ranked online faculty

According to the U.S. News and World Report’s latest study of online graduate education programs, the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) online education instructors rank among the best 35 in the nation. The measures of faculty quality are based primarily on the educational background and tenure status of online instructors, as well as the quantity and quality of both initial and continuing teacher training programs covering online teaching practices.

Decent mix of degree options

Eastern Kentucky University offers a good variety of degree options that are sure to appeal to many prospective students. You can choose from programs in elementary education, learning and behavior disorders, library science, classroom leadership, and education facility safety management. The library science program and the safety management programs are relatively rare degree options among the top online programs and represent a great opportunity if you’re interested in pursuing a career in one of those areas. Apart from the library science option, admission into each of the EKU graduate education programs requires you to have a valid teacher certification from a state certification body.

Moderate tuition rates

Tuition at Eastern Kentucky University is quite reasonable in relation to other top programs. The school charges $490 per credit, which places them in the top tier of affordability led by South Dakota State University, which charges $400 per credit. Many other quality programs charge between $500 and $700 per credit. One of the very best programs in the country, St. John’s University, charges $1,100 per credit, so that gives you an idea of the tuition ranges. Given the fact that EKU students enjoy classes taught by the top-ranked online education faculty in the country, it’s safe to say that the program offers one of the best value-for-money options around.

The Bad

Student engagement could use improvement

Eastern Kentucky University could stand to improve their level of student engagement. They rank 134th out of 200 programs in the nation in this category. They do very well in the areas of student services and technology, however, earning a top 20 spot. They also have a very experienced faculty, scoring 35th out of 200 schools in this category. So one low number shouldn’t hurt Eastern Kentucky University too bad. You will still find a quality education here.

Programs not available in some states

Currently, EKU doesn’t offer online programs to students living in Massachusetts, Delaware, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Texas. Federal regulations require all accredited online schools to apply for authorization from a state’s higher education authority before delivering any online programs to the state’s residents. EKU has yet to gain authorization from the five states listed above. If your state has not yet granted authorization, it’s important to check with an academic advisor for the latest news, since authorization status can change at any time.
