The Good

Top national ranking

In the most recent survey of online graduate education programs by U.S. News and World Report, St. John’s University rated as the 5th best program in the nation. The university scored well in virtually every measured category included in the study, from instructional quality to student services to course delivery technology. On measures of faculty quality, the university’s online instructors rate among the top 10 faculties in the nation. They stand out for high standards of student engagement and professional training. St. John’s instructors teach courses both online and on campus, so you can be sure that you’re always getting the same quality instruction as students located in New York.

Excellent student support services

In addition to top-quality courses and instructors, St. John’s online students also enjoy access to some of the best student services of any online program. Virtually every student service available on campus is available to online students via telephone or email, or through the school’s online course delivery platform. Whether you need assistance from an academic advisor, a financial aid specialist, a career counselor, or a technical support expert, you can get it online during regular office hours. If you need help writing a paper, the Writing Center provides one-on-one consultations via real-time online chat. Even the St. John’s Wellness Center offers health and wellness screenings and other services online.

Comprehensive online library resources

The St. John’s library system maintains an excellent collection of electronic journals and e-books, which are all fully accessible to online students. Dozens of research databases are also available online to help you in your studies. Online students can even get telephone or online assistance from St. John’s research librarians during regular library hours. You can get online support through the library’s Ask Us! messaging system, which provides access to a searchable database of library support information and connects you with a research assistance if you can’t find an answer to your question in the database.

The Bad

High tuition

With tuition at $1,100 per credit, St. John’s has one of the most expensive online graduate education programs. In comparison, South Dakota State University, one of the most affordable options available, charges only $400 per credit. Additionally, at least five other very solid programs charge less than $500 per credit. Although St. John’s offers one of the best online graduate education programs in the country, your budget will ultimately determine whether the program is ultimately worth the relatively high cost.

Only three degree options

With only three online concentrations to choose from, St. John’s University may not offer a masters degree in education that meets your professional goals. The school’s online graduate programs include degrees in educational administration, special education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The educational administration program focuses on general leadership skills to prepare students for administrative and supervisory positions in primary and secondary schools. The special education program focuses on teaching young children with disabilities. If you’re looking for training in popular subjects like literacy instruction, classroom technology integration, or classroom management, you’ll have to consider other schools. Auburn University’s online graduate education program might be worth a look if you’re looking for an online school that offers many concentrations in education.
