The Good

Nurse practitioner program with five focus areas

Stony Brook University-SUNY (SBU-SUNY) offers a an advanced nursing practice program for those who want to become nurse practitioners in one of five different areas. Choices of specialization include adult health, women’s health, neonatal health, pediatrics, and psychiatric or mental health. If you are a nurse interested in providing expert care in any one of these areas, earning a master of science in nursing from SBU-SUNY includes a combination of online courses and on-site clinic hours. Not all online nursing programs offer nurse practitioner options, and in order to gain acceptance into the program you will need to meet all basic entry requirements in addition to having a minimum of one year relevant experience.

Non-nursing bachelor's degree holders are accepted

The online nursing program at SBU-SUNY accepts applicants who do not have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, but work as a registered nurse with a current license. If you are seeking to admission to the nursing program at SBU-SUNY but do not hold a BSN, you will be required to submit a clinical practice portfolio. This is only required for applicants who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing, and the portfolio is used to make sure you have undergraduate-level nursing competencies. You will be given the exact portfolio criteria and charged a $300 fee to have your portfolio reviewed only after you have been offered conditional acceptance.

Other advanced degrees and advanced certificate options

In addition to the several nurse practitioner options already outlined, the nursing program at SBU-SUNY also offers several other master’s level nursing degrees, a doctorate of nursing practice degree, and multiple advanced certificates. The department offers a master of science in nursing education and nurse midwifery, and certificate options are available in each of these areas, and the nurse practitioner discipline. Most online nursing programs do not support this many degree levels or areas of concentration, so no matter the exact degree type you currently have, or seek to gain, SBU-SUNY likely has a suitable option for you.

The Bad

Not available in every state

Due to state regulations for online education, some applicants to online degree programs at SBU-SUNY may not gain admission based on their state of residence. SBU-SUNY is based in New York state, so if you are an applicant and resident there, you will have no issues with online program availability. However, if you if you live anywhere outside of the state of New York you will want to verify you own home state’s eligibility with an admissions counselor. Availability can vary based on program, and there is no single online resource specifying which states are supported and which are not, so you will need to get in touch with your program of interest directly.

On-site requirements

Every online nursing degree available at SBU-SUNY has a on-site clinic requirements. This can be beneficial as it adds practical, real-world experience to your curriculum, but it can be a hassle considering it cannot be completed online. The SBU-SUNY school of nursing requires all graduate students to complete a certain numbers of hours immersed in a clinic setting, and student of the doctorate of nursing practice program must complete on-site residencies as part of their degree program. SBU-SUNY does not have clinic relationships established in every state, which is why the program availability varies state by state. If there is not a clinic setting available near you, the school may not be a viable option.
