T-Mobile Review

A wide variety of phone options and some of the best unlimited plans around have earned T-Mobile a spot among the industry's elite prepaid phone providers. Some of their plan prices exceed those of their competitors, but the rare-to-find higher data speeds may make up for the higher costs.

The Good

All types of plans

In addition to their unlimited plans, T-Mobile also offers pay-as-you-go and daily prepaid plans. The pay-as-you-go plan enables you to purchase just 30 minutes at a time, and they don’t expire for 90 days. Another unique solution, one that’s particularly well suited to younger customers, is the unlimited web and text plan. As the name implies, this plan lets you text and surf the web as much as you want. It also includes 100 minutes of talk time for those occasions when you do need to make a call.

Huge selection of phones

T-Mobile has one of the largest selections of new and refurbished prepaid phones out there. With everything from simple flip phones to smartphones to SIM cards, chances are you won’t have any trouble finding a product that you want. Refurbished phones are an excellent option if you don’t have the money to pay for a new phone. Your other money-saving option is to bring your old phone and just purchase a SIM card from T-Mobile. If you have a compatible device, this is definitely something worth considering.

Prepaid plans for families

T-Mobile’s family plan lets you add up to four lines and gives all members unlimited talk, text, and data usage. You can start with just two lines for around $80 per month and, if you need to add more down the line, you should be able to without too much difficulty. Each additional line costs $10, so it won’t put too much of a strain on your budget. Family plans aren’t all that common among prepaid phone providers but, if you’re looking to save a little money on your phone plan, this is a good way to do it. Even if you just have one other person on your account, you’ll both save quite a bit over time.

Unlimited 4G LTE data

Unlike most prepaid phone companies, T-Mobile doesn’t restrict the amount of 4G LTE data you can use. This, of course, means you have to pay a little more, but it could be worth it if you spend a lot of time surfing the web. Many prepaid companies only allow their customers to use a certain amount of 4G LTE data before dramatically decreasing speeds until the start of the next month. Though T-Mobile also has plans like this for customers who are moderate data users, they also take it a step further by offering a truly unlimited plan. In addition to unlimited 4G LTE data, you also receive unlimited talk and text for a flat monthly rate.

Activating your service is easy

Once you choose a T-Mobile prepaid phone and receive it in the mail, all you have to do to start using your service is pick a plan and activate the device. In order to activate your phone, enter the necessary information online, which can all be found on your phone and the materials that come with it. Once you put in your activation code, SIM card number, serial number, and phone number, set up your online account, choose your plan, and then enjoy your prepaid phone service.

The Bad

Pricey unlimited plans

Depending on your data usage, T-Mobile’s unlimited plans can get pretty expensive. Some plans cost as much as $95 per month, which is a little on the high end for this industry. However, at the same time, this plan also includes unlimited 4G LTE data speeds, something that’s also very difficult to find with a prepaid phone provider and may help justify paying a little extra for your monthly unlimited plan. At the end of the day, T-Mobile still has a number of other options, including some more affordable unlimited plans, that may be a better fit.
