Mavenlink Review

Mavenlink's excellent scheduling tools make it well-suited for larger teams with several projects, though high-end plans can get pricey.

The Good

Easy to schedule projects

When you create a task or project, you can choose when you would like that project to be finished by, and even add the estimated number of work hours that it should take. If you’d like to view all of your projects in a timeline, you can switch to the Gantt chart view. This should help you get a good sense of whether you’re scheduling tasks appropriately or if you’re overworking or underworking your team. It can also help you figure out when would be a good time to begin a new project. While these tools will be valuable to any organization, they will probably be most useful to companies with several projects going on at the same time.

Financial management tools

If you choose to go with Mavenlink’s Teams plan, the least expensive paid option, you will get access to valuable financial management tools in addition to all the features found in the Free plan. There are tools to help you track expenses and also create invoices. You can set specific rates for tasks or certain users, and even distinguish between billable and non-billable time. If you need to analyze your financial data, you can just choose the projects you want to look at, and create a report. Although its financial tools may not be quite up to comprehensive project management software standards, they are still undeniably nice resources to have for staying on top of your finances.

Manage your projects for free

Mavenlink’s Free plan comes with an unlimited number of users and projects and 500 MB of storage. If your team is small and you don’t have too many project-related documents to add to the system, you may just be able to get everything you need with this plan. And if you find that you need more space, you can always upgrade to Mavenlink’s Teams or Premier plan, which have 20 GB and 100 GB of storage space, respectively.

Basic resource management tools

As an admin in Mavenlink, you can adjust users’ permissions so that they only have access to their projects and tasks. You can also put resources together into groups, and then assign that particular group to a task instead of assigning everyone individually. You can also adjust permissions as a group. These tools will be useful to any project manager, but especially for those that have a large number of resources to keep track of.

Keep track of resources' time

Mavenlink has a time clock built in to enable you to accurately track the amount of time that you spend on a particular project or task. When you’re finished, you can log your time in a timesheet, and submit that timesheet to the manager for approval. This can be extremely useful for figuring out how to allocate resources efficiently and plan for future projects, making Mavenlink well-suited for larger teams.

The Bad

Paid plans are expensive

If Mavenlink’s Free plan doesn’t have enough storage space for you, you’ll have to upgrade to either the Teams or Premier package, and these plans are comparatively expensive. One thing to note about this, however, is you do get additional features, such as financial management tools, with these paid plans that are not included in the Basic plan, so it may be well worth the upgrade for some. But if finding a software that fits into a tight budget is your top priority, there are probably better options out there than Mavenlink.

Need priciest plan to access all report options

If you have the Free or Basic plan, your options are pretty much limited to budget, expense, and time reports. Invoice reports, project summaries, accounts receivable reports, work-in-progress reports, and task budgeting is only available with the Premier plan. Mavenlink does let you generate custom reports with all plans, though, so you may be able to create a report detailing the information you need even if there aren’t any suitable built-in reports.
