Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students Review

The Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students has no annual fee and does not require a cosigner. Those with diverse purchasing habits will appreciate competitive introductory rates and 5% cash back on rotating categories of rewards.

The Good

5% cash back on rotating categories

The Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students offers 5% cash back for all purchases at specified retailers and websites. For example, cardholders will receive 5% cash back at, fitness clubs, and drugstores from January 1 through March 31, 2013. The specific retailers and websites included in the category will rotate each quarter, so you will have the ability to receive rewards for a variety of purchases throughout the year. For those with varying purchasing habits, the Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card can be a great option.

No cosigner required

Not many college students have established much of a credit history. Because of this, many student credit cards will require a cosigner on the credit account. However, the Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card does not require a cosigner. This allows students to begin establishing credit, without the potential burden of finding someone to cosign.

Citi® Identity Theft Solutions

In addition to security features like Citi® Photocard, which places your photo and signature on the front of the credit card, the Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card includes identity theft resources. Citi® Identity Theft Solutions will provide you with specialized assistance if your identity is ever compromised. Identity theft is not uncommon on college campuses, and having these tools at your disposal could be very helpful should you ever become a victim of it.

Decent introductory features

Introductory rates are not always offered with student credit cards. The Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card offers 0% for the first seven months of card ownership. Although this is not the best in the industry, it is still better than most. Competitive introductory rates can be a great tool for those interested in getting a little interest rate relief.

The Bad

Quarterly enrollment required

The bonus rewards options that rotate quarterly will provide you with several ways to earn cash back throughout the year. However, as the categories rotate every couple of months, you are required to sign up each time. The average college student has many different demands constantly requiring attention. Instead of automatically enrolling you and saving you the hassle, you’ll have to be sure to enroll each quarter.

Maximum of $300 dividend dollars

Some student credit cards will allow you to earn unlimited rewards. The Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card limits your cash back rewards to $300 Dividend Dollars per year. Although you may be operating on a limited budget, books, housing, food, and other common costs can add up quickly. Dividend Dollars spent in the Citi® Bonus Cash Center are not subject to the cap, but if having access to unlimited rewards is important to you, there may be a student rewards card that is better suited for you.

$50 check increments

Cash rewards will appear as Dividend Dollars on your monthly billing statement, allowing you to easily monitor your balance. However, reward checks are only distributed in $50 increments. College students are often operating on a very tight budget, and there are times when an extra $10, $25, or $30 could be life-saving. Having access to your rewards when you want and need them would be far superior than forcing you to wait until you hit $50.
