Time Warner Cable Review

Time Warner Cable is one of the largest cable TV companies in the industry. Their On Demand options are impressive, and even the most basic packages are affordable, but sub-par customer support might have you looking for an alternative provider.

The Good

Large On Demand library

If you love movies and access to other TV programs, you will appreciate the large On Demand catalogue offered by Time Warner Cable. With more than 15,000 titles, you'll be able to watch a variety of movies, premium TV series, cable TV series, and more, all on your schedule, whenever you want. If On Demand programming is important to you, Time Warner Cable will not disappoint.

Start Over® and Look Back® features

Start Over® and Look Back® are two unique features offered by Time Warner Cable that help improve your TV viewing experience. Start Over® allows you to restart a show that is currently in progress, while Look Back® gives you the ability to watch Primetime shows up to 72 hours after they have aired. With features like these, it's all about giving you the freedom to watch the programs you want on your time. If you appreciate a little extra control over your TV watching schedule, Time Warner Cable has a great set of tools to assist you.

Respectable mobile capabilities

If you are a Time Warner Cable video subscriber, you may want to take advantage of the TWC TV mobile application. With this app, you'll be able to stream live TV and On Demand programming to your tablet, computer, or mobile phone, while in your home. You can also watch select TV and movies through your Apple or Android device when you're on the go through any WiFi connection. In addition, you can program your DVR, set parental controls, and browse the interactive program guide.

Spanish language package

Spanish language programming is becoming an increasingly common product offered by top TV providers. Unlike many cable providers that only include one or two Spanish language channels in their programming, Time Warner Cable offers DTV Español, which includes over 200 Spanish and English channels. Obviously, Spanish language programming is not a necessity in all households, but if it is a priority in your home, a package like DTV Español will be a great option.

Available in most states

One of the major drawbacks to some cable TV providers is the limited availability, as many companies only operate in a handful of markets. It can be frustrating to find a TV provider that offers all of the content and services you're looking for, and then find out the company does not offer service in your area. Operating in the majority of states, Time Warner Cable is one of the largest and most accessible cable companies.

The Bad

DVR recording limited to two live shows at once

Finding the right DVR is an important part of a quality TV experience. While Time Warner Cable allows you to choose from a number of DVR options, the best DVR only allows you to record two programs at once. For many households, this will be plenty. However, if there are several TVs in your home and different family members are all wanting to record their own shows, this could be problematic. There are a few TV providers out there that provide equipment that allows you to record 5+ shows at the same time. If this feature is something you'll need, Time Warner Cable may not be the best fit.

Tough to find exact pricing information

In the TV provider industry, most companies will offer a lower introductory rate that typically lasts for the first six, nine, or twelve months of the contract. After that introductory time period expires, rates usually increase. Most TV providers will clearly present the introductory rate, the length of the offer, and the price after the intro offer expires. Time Warner does provide the introductory rate and the length of the offer, but you won't be able to find the price after expiration online. Even when contacting the company directly, it is still difficult to get a straight answer. Lack of transparency is frustrating, especially when it results in unexpected expenses.

Subpar customer service reputation

Time Warner Cable is one of several cable providers that rank among the worst in surveys that measure customer service. To be fair, the cable industry in general is notorious for providing poor customer service, but Time Warner Cable is one of the companies that repeatedly shows up in various reports and surveys year after year. Time Warner Cable does have many admirable services, and many customers don't experience any problems with the service, but before signing up, it may be worth it to test out the customer service on your own.
