8x8 Review

8x8 is one of the largest VoIP services in the industry, offering flexible business communications solutions with advanced tools, including video conferencing and CRM software integration. Residential customers will have to look elsewhere, however.

The Good

Flexible, scalable plans

8×8 offers three different types of extensions to choose from: metered, unlimited, and global. You can purchase as many extensions as you need and mix and match the different types to create a solution that works best for your organization. Metered Extensions come with 250 minutes and charge a per-minute rate thereafter. These lines are great if you don’t make a lot of calls but still need a way to be reached. Unlimited Extensions offer unlimited calling to anywhere in the U.S., Canada, and eight other countries, including several in Europe. If your company conducts a lot of international business, consider Global Extensions instead. These enable you to make an unlimited amount of calls to over 40 countries around the world. Add or upgrade lines at any time to ensure you always have the best VoIP solution for your business.

Advanced call management tools

Larger organizations will appreciate the ability to set up auto attendants that direct callers to the right places. Music helps keep the callers occupied while they’re on hold, and ring groups help employees share the phone calls directed to a particular department, such as sales or customer support. Make it even easier to contact the right people by assigning every employee their own three- to five-digit extension number. These tools aren’t something you can find with every VoIP company, but they’re essential to helping a large enterprise run smoothly, so 8×8 is definitely a top contender when it comes to business VoIP services.

Host virtual meetings and conferences

If you choose to upgrade to 8×8 Virtual Office Pro, you get the capability to host audio and video conferences through the VoIP service. There’s no limit to the number of conferences, though you’ll be charged extra if you have more than 15 people on a single call. Record these calls if you need to so you can refer back to them at a later date. Collaborating on a specific document is also easy, thanks to screen-sharing technology and the ability to access someone else’s desktop.

Select any type of phone number

Businesses with 8×8 as their VoIP service provider are able to select toll-free, vanity, or local phone numbers from any area code in the country. Local and toll-free numbers are found with the majority of VoIP providers, but vanity numbers, which enable you to spell out a easy-to-remember message, are much less common. If you already have a local, vanity, or toll-free number you’d like to keep, you also have the option to transfer that number over to 8×8 rather than purchasing a new one.

Integrates with popular business applications

8×8 integrates with several popular customer relationship management software, including Salesforce and SugarCRM. This is a rare but valuable service not offered by most VoIP phone service providers, enabling you to make phone calls from 8×8’s softphone simply by clicking on the contact’s name in the CRM software. When a business associate contacts you, all of their information stored in your CRM software pops up in a window on the screen so you don’t have to go hunting for it yourself. This helps streamline communications between your company and clients.

The Bad

No residential service plans

8×8 only specializes in offering VoIP solutions for businesses. If you’re looking for residential service, there are plenty of other options, including Ooma and BroadVoice. However, if you’re a business owner, 8×8 is definitely worth a closer look because they offer a wide variety of business-oriented solutions you can’t find elsewhere for companies of all sizes.

Canceling service early is expensive

If you sign a contract with 8×8, cancelling service early can result in an early termination fee of up to $200. This type of fee is very common among VoIP providers, so the only thing you can really do to avoid it is plan to ensure you stick it out until the end. Most people won’t have a problem with this, but it’s something to keep in mind as you calculate your costs, especially if you think there’s any likely reason you cannot commit to the duration of the contract.
