Ooma Review

Ooma stands out for its unique and affordable pricing, charging customers only taxes and fees after the initial purchase. However, certain features that come standard with other companies cost extra.

The Good

Pay only taxes and fees

After you’ve purchased the Ooma Telo, which connects your home phone to your Internet service, you don’t have to pay anything for VoIP service apart from taxes and fees. These costs vary depending on where you live, but they generally amount to less than $5 per month. This makes Ooma among the cheapest VoIP providers in the industry. Of course, the upfront costs are rather high since you have to purchase the Telo device, but in the long term, you won’t be able to find a much more affordable home phone solution.

Crystal-clear call quality

Thanks to Ooma’s PureVoice™ HD technology, calls come through loud and clear by using considerably less bandwidth than most other VoIP companies. Call quality can be an issue with some VoIP services if Internet speeds aren’t fast enough, which can result in choppy, garbled phone calls. Ooma has taken several steps to ensure this doesn’t become an issue for their customers and that the call quality you receive is the same as you’d expect from a landline.

Buy as many international minutes as you need

With Ooma, you can pay for international minutes in two ways: by adding money to your pay-as-you-go account or purchasing a subscription. Paying as you go is the easiest route if you rarely make calls to other countries and don’t want to invest in a monthly subscription. Subscriptions are perfect for those who make more frequent international calls. There are three different packages to choose from: 500-minute, 1000-minute, and unlimited. The 500-minute plan is only available to Premier customers, but the other plans are open to anyone. All of these plans include international calling to landlines in over 60 countries and cell phones in 12 countries.

Free trial of premier service

When you sign up for Ooma’s Basic service, you’re automatically enrolled in a 60-day free trial of Ooma Premier. This service is normally $10 per month and includes bonus features like a second phone line, free mobile minutes, and a host of advanced call-management tools. If you decide you aren’t interested in the Premier service after the 60 days are up, just opt out through your online account. Remember not opting out will result in your account being billed for Premier service after the first two months.

The Bad

Standard features cost extra

Ooma’s Basic plan, which only requires you to pay taxes and fees, is lacking a number of relatively standard features like three-way calling and free calls to Canada. In order to get access to these features, you need to upgrade to their Premier plan, which costs $10 per month. This isn’t a bad deal and the price is still relatively affordable compared to the rest of the industry, but the majority of VoIP providers include a lot of these upgrades as part of even their most basic plans. If you can’t live without some of these advanced calling features, consider going with the Premier plan.

Can't make calls from your computer

Ooma doesn’t provide a softphone, so you need to have a home or mobile phone in order to make calls through their service. This isn’t going to be an issue for most people, who are likely investing in Ooma as a replacement for their traditional home phone service.
