The Good

Wide selection of VoIP plans

While most VoIP providers give their customers one or two plans to choose from, Vonage offers seven, making it much more likely to find a solution that fits your specific needs. If you’re looking to replace your traditional phone service with VoIP, one of the residential plans is likely to be a good fit. They include 400, 800, or unlimited minutes to anywhere in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. The 400- or 800-minute plan is best if you rarely make calls, but go with the Unlimited plan if you’re worried about overages. The World plans are great if you make a lot of international phone calls. There are specialty plans for Mexico and the Philippines, plus more general plans that include unlimited calls to over 60 countries around the world.

Customize a solution for your business

Vonage Business Solutions provide three different types of VoIP extensions: metered, unlimited, and virtual. Metered extensions are a cost-effective option for employees who don’t make many phone calls, while virtual extensions are ideal for those who spend a lot of time out of the office. Unlimited plans are the most popular and include unlimited calling for a flat monthly rate. Business owners are able to mix and match these different types of extensions to come up with a custom solution that fits their budget and organization. As time goes on, lines can be added, deleted, or switched to a different type to suit the changing needs of the business. Discounts are also available for purchasing multiple lines.

Take your VoIP service with you

Vonage Mobile lets you connect with your family and friends while you’re on the go without using your cell phone minutes. First, download the app for your iPhone or Android device. Then, sign in to your Vonage account and get started making calls. You need to register your device with your Vonage account when you sign up. You can have up to five devices per account, so add your tablet as well as your smartphone. Video calling is also an option for those who’d like to speak face to face. Send text, picture, and video messages as well. You’re even able to adjust certain call settings, like call forwarding, right from your phone. This way, all of the calls to your home phone can be automatically routed to your cell phone while you’re out and about.

Online resources ease decision-making

Vonage offers a number of online tools and calculators to help you determine if they’re the right VoIP provider for you. They can be found on the right side of every page near the bottom. Startup Cost and Savings calculators help you calculate how much Vonage service will likely cost you and how much it’s going to save you over time. This is especially useful if you’re operating on a tight budget for phone service. There are also multiple tools to help you choose a phone number for your Vonage plan. In many cases, you can port your existing phone number over, which you can check by entering it into the Keep Existing Number tool. If you want a new number, take a look at the Available Area Codes tool to see what your options are. There’s also an Internet Speed Tester so you can make sure your Internet is fast enough to make VoIP phone service a possibility.

Optimize call quality with Bandwidth Saver

Like all VoIP services, Vonage uses your Internet connection, and your call quality suffers if that connection is slow. Should you experience any issues, adjusting the amount of bandwidth usually fixes the problem. Lowering the amount of bandwidth the VoIP service uses results in fewer delays and makes it easier to hear the other person clearly. To adjust these settings, log in to your Vonage account and find the Bandwidth Saver under the Telephone Adapter section. Then, lower the amount of bandwidth to either 30 kbps or 50 kbps.

Phone cards for international calling

If you don’t anticipate making a lot of international calls, it may be more cost-effective for you to purchase a global calling card instead of one of Vonage’s World plans. To get started, sign up for a calling card account and add credits as you need them. Set up your account to automatically refill your account when the balance gets low. Note that each country has a different per-minute rate, which you can find on Vonage’s website.

The Bad

Higher-than-average monthly fees

The monthly rates associated with all of Vonage’s calling plans are slightly higher than the rates you find with most other companies. If you commit to a one-year contract, you get a low, introductory rate for the first few months, but then you pay just as much as those who didn’t sign a contract at all. Vonage also charges their customers an additional $10 per month to use their softphone, which is usually free with other VoIP providers. These things may make Vonage too expensive for those on a tight budget, but before you cross them off your list, it’s important to take a look at everything they have to offer. They do have some more affordable plans that might suit you well if you don’t spend a lot of time talking on the phone.
