Set for College Review

Set For College offers small class sizes and solid private tutoring options, but falls a bit behind when it comes to supplementary study materials and quality guarantees.

The Good

Intimate online classes

Every Set For College online ACT and SAT prep course is limited to no more than eight students, which ensures every participant has plenty of opportunities to ask questions and engage in class discussions. Class enrollment limits vary among other top prep course providers, but only Top Test Prep offers smaller class sizes than Set For College. Each six-week course includes 18 hours of instruction, which is a little below other top providers in the market. Set For College offers just one traditional classroom course in Plano, Texas.

One-on-one online tutoring available

Students who plan to enroll in an ACT or SAT prep course can add four hours of tutoring at a discounted price. This is a great option for students who want extra help with challenging concepts and test questions. Students can also create a customized one-on-one course with a tutor, either in conjunction with or in replacement of a standard prep course. Tutoring services are available both online and on site in Plano, Texas.

One-day SAT strategy course available

Set For College offers a relatively unique one-day SAT course, which is designed as a quick refresher for students who are retaking the SAT but don’t want to complete a full prep course for a second time. Students review math, critical reading, and writing content and discuss strategies for all the different question types commonly found on the test. This course is available in classroom and online versions.

The Bad

Relatively few supplementary study materials

Set For College falls behind the competition when it comes to providing supplementary study materials like quiz questions, interactive online practice drills, and archived video lessons. While the best prep course providers, such as Kaplan and The Princeton Review, offer thousands of categorized practice questions and optional learning materials of all kinds, Set For College offers just a single study guide that covers general test concepts and strategy. Although students do receive professional-quality instruction in small classes — which often makes a positive difference in the learning experience — most students also gain a lot of benefit from additional learning materials.

No quality guarantee

The most common guarantee in the industry grants a refund to any student who doesn’t show an improved test score after completing a full prep course. Another common promise grants the right to retake a course for free if the student doesn’t feel sufficiently prepared after the first try. While the lack of a guarantee probably won’t be a deal breaker, it would be helpful if Set For College introduced a guarantee that enables students to retake a course if their scores do not improve after the first attempt.
