The Hartford Auto Insurance Review
Thanks to its deer mascot, The Hartford is one of the most recognizable insurance providers in America. Named after Hartford, Connecticut, and based there since 1913, The Hartford specializes in auto insurance for AARP members but still offers coverage for younger drivers, too. Selected by Ethisphere as one of the "World’s Most Ethical Companies" seven times since 2010, The Hartford has a reputation as a trustworthy company, which is reflected in its high customer satisfaction rates.
The Hartford promises a “commitment to [its] customers” before all else and positions itself as the best choice for senior drivers.
Is it true?
The Hartford scores extremely well on J.D. Power’s annual customer satisfaction surveys — better, in fact, than any of the “big four” insurance companies: State Farm, Geico, Allstate, and Progressive. It’s clear that The Hartford thinks about customer experience in everything it does, since even its online quote and purchase tools are incredibly user-friendly, with simple interfaces and easily digestible sections.
The Hartford provides plenty of discounts for homeownership, anti-theft devices, and good driving records, but it reserves its biggest benefits for AARP members. In fact, its website emphasizes the AARP program so heavily, it’s easy to miss the fact that it provides insurance to non-members as well. If you are an AARP member, you’ll qualify for:
- Lifetime renewability (even in the event of accidents and convictions)
- 12-month rate protection
- New car replacement (within the first 15 months or 15,000 miles of purchase)
- Towing and labor coverage
- A perk called RecoverCare that provides “up to $2,500 to pay for transportation, cooking, cleaning, and other help you may need if you’re injured in a car accident”
A few optional coverage add-ons for AARP members include First Accident Forgiveness, the ability to pay a single deductible for two vehicles, and a “disappearing” deductible when you keep your driving record clean. With this consumer-facing approach and a wealth of policy perks — particularly if you’re a member of AARP — we highly recommend including The Hartford in your quote collection process.

Ease of new policy purchase
The Hartford boasts an impressive suite of online tools to assist new customers in shopping for and beginning a new auto insurance policy. The company allows you to get an instant online quote and even offers a tool to help you select the right levels of coverage for your situation. After customizing levels of coverage and receiving a quote, customers can purchase a policy online and print insurance cards.
Diverse policy offerings
Policy offerings are a critical element of evaluating an insurance company. Thanks to its broad list of coverages and policy types, The Hartford auto insurance is an industry leader. The company offers standard bodily injury and property liability coverages, as well as non-owned or rental car insurance. In states where it is allowed, The Hartford also offers a number of options to stack liability and uninsured motorist coverage.
Excellent claims management
No one looks forward to filing an insurance claim, but if the need arises, convenience can make an enormous difference. The Hartford auto insurance has created a claims process that allows customers to file 24/7 by phone, agent, online, or via a mobile app. Unlike some competitors, the company does not impose restrictions on where you can have your vehicle fixed, and it has a resource for repair facility recommendations. Once a claim has been filed, it can be easily tracked online, through the mobile app, or by calling the claims center at any time.
The Hartford is regarded by many as a company that cares about its customers, and that reputation is well-earned. The company has robust support features available, ranging from traditional telephone support to more modern email and social media options. It’s also one of only a handful of auto insurance companies to offer real-time online chat to customers navigating the quote process.
Useful policy benefits
In addition to The Hartford’s standard coverages, customers may also elect to receive a wide range of additional features. Frequent travelers will appreciate the company’s roadside assistance and towing programs. Other accident-related benefits include rental car or public transportation reimbursement and dedicated medical payment coverage. If you’re seriously injured and unable to meet basic obligations, the company will even cover assistance with shopping, gardening, and certain home maintenance.
Minimal learning materials
The Hartford falls well behind competing companies with its limited online learning resources. Despite the company’s excellent customer support features, it offers very little to new buyers wanting to learn more about the insurance process. The Hartford’s website includes a few FAQs and a limited selection of video tutorials outlining insurance types, but many other companies go above and beyond with knowledge bases and glossaries that allow customers to better understand the insurance-buying process. The Hartford’s lack of resources is a big strike against it, especially for first-time or inexperienced auto insurance buyers.

The Hartford vs. Allstate
The Hartford’s customer satisfaction surveys are higher than Allstate’s, but its financial ratings are lower. Of course, that’s partially because Allstate is a much larger company, and those tend to last longer during recessions like the 2008 housing crisis. However, if you’re an AARP member, Allstate’s discounts and benefits just can’t compete with what’s available through The Hartford. Plus, an “A” rating from A.M. Best denotes “an excellent ability to meet their ongoing insurance obligations,” so The Hartford still ranks among other top providers for financial stability. We recommend getting a quote from both companies before making your decision.
The Hartford vs. State Farm
State Farm compares with The Hartford in much the same way as Allstate: lower customer satisfaction rates but higher financial security. Since State Farm is the largest auto insurance provider in the United States, there’s also a higher chance of finding an agent to speak with in-person, even if you live in a small town. Of course, if you’re an AARP member, The Hartford is probably still your best bet when it comes to costs and coverage. Otherwise, State Farm and The Hartford offer a similar number of discounts and supplemental coverage options, so it’s worth comparing quotes from both.
