It’s officially summer now that Amazon has confirmed the dates of its biggest sale of the year: Prime Day. Last year, shoppers purchased more than 100 million products during the 36-hour event, despite a series of glitches that stalled the site, CNBC reported. This year, Amazon is extending Prime Day to 48 hours, with some deals releasing early in the days leading up to the sale.

Prime Day 2019 starts at 3 a.m. Monday, July 15, ET, and ends at 3 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, ET

In a press release, Amazon promises over a million deals accessible to Prime members around the world that will include limited-time offers, celebrity collaborations, and in-store offers. This year will feature new Lightning Deals, which Amazon describes as “jaw-dropping prices on top-tier brands” that will have limited stock and therefore are likely to go fast.

The company also said “members will find the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices” and hinted at 30% savings on connected home devices It’s no surprise Amazon will use the day to promote its own products, but with recent acquisitions of Ring and other smart tech, Prime Day is shaping up to be well worth the attention of those interested in setting up a smart home.

Your Smart Home Shopping List

We put together a shopping list that includes all the smart home basics Amazon offers (and all are compatible with each other). Some are already on sale for Prime Day, and the others could follow suit.

If you bought each of these items at Amazon’s list price, the total would be $1,970. For categories with multiple recommended products, only the least expensive one was included for calculation. Based on last year’s prices, the average 2018 Prime Day discount (38%, as reported on by slickdeals), and current deals as of 6/26/19, the same cart would probably have cost you about $1,295 last year. That’s a savings of $675, or over 65%. And with more deals unrolling each day, the savings could get even better.

For our smart home resources guide back in April, we surveyed over 1,200 respondents to understand which smart devices are the best. We found the most popular device was the Amazon Echo, so it could make sense to start your home automation shopping spree on Amazon and during Prime Day.

Smart Hub

According to our guide, Everything You Need to Know About Home Automation, a good way to start building our a smart home is to first purchase a smart hub and then buy additional devices that will work with the hub to simplify your life.

On Prime Day, we recommend looking to purchase the Amazon Echo Plus (regularly $150). It’s the best voice-assisted Smart Hub and is equipped with ZigBee hub, meaning it’s easy to connect compatible products. Since it’s one of Amazon’s own Alexa-enabled devices, there’s a good chance it will be on sale over Prime Day. Last year, it was $50 off and included a free smart bulb with purchase. For an even more affordable option, the basic Echo will be $50 off this year and you can add on an Amazon Smart Plug for less than $5. Plus, you can save 55% when you bundle an Echo Dot with a TP-Link Switch.

Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats set your home at the perfect temperature with little-to-no effort on your part. They’ll learn your schedule and temperature preferences and will usually help you save some money by cutting down on your energy bill.

Our top picks in this category are the Ecobee4 (most user-friendly) and the Nest Learning Thermostat (sleekest design). They both retail at over $200, though right now the Ecobee4 is $50 off. Both are candidates for a Prime Day deal since both work with Alexa, although only the Ecobee3 was on sale last year ($200 for a bundle that included the thermostat and three temperature sensors).

Smart Lights

Smart light bulbs look the same as ordinary ones, but they can be controlled via voice commands, smartphone apps and schedules you set. With these, there’s no need to panic next time you’re on vacation and realize you left a light on.

Amazon offers a vast selection of smart lights, including our favorites: the Philips Hue Bulb ($50), and the Lifx bulbs ($60). Both work with Alexa, and since you’ll probably want multiple bulbs for your smart home, it makes sense to stock up if they’re on sale for Prime Day.

The Lutron Smart Dimmer Starter Kit will be 30% off, and the Caseta Smart Lighting Dimmer Switch will be 28% off for Prime Day.

Robot Vacuum

These time-savers will learn your home’s layout so they can clean your floors while you do anything other than vacuuming. You can also control them through your smart hub. The iRobot Roomba 690 ($375) and the EcoVacs Deebot N79S ($229) are both Alexa-enabled and were on sale during Prime Day 2018 for $230 and $170, respectively. Amazon didn’t disclose the exact discount in its press release, but said Roomba products would be on sale this year.

Smart Plugs

Though they’re small, smart plugs may be some of the most powerful items you buy for a smart home because they can essentially make any other device or appliance smart.

Our favorite smart plugs come from Etekcity ($19 for two), Kasa ($18), and GoSund ($33 for four).

They’re pretty inexpensive to begin with, so it’s unlikely you’ll see steep discounts on them. However, it’s still a good idea to buy them when you purchase everything else so you can start setting up your smart home as soon as your shipment arrives. And since we’re talking about Amazon, that will probably the next day.

Doorbell Cameras

These are a great first step in securing your smart home because they allow you to monitor who is coming to your door and even unlock (or lock) it from afar.

Amazon recently bought Ring and released the Ring Door View Cam, so it’s a likely contender for steep Prime Day discounts as a way to promote the new item, which is perfect, because it was one of our favorites, too. A more basic option, the Ring Video Doorbell, (regularly $100) will be on sale for just $70.

Blink, another Amazon company, just released a new outdoor/indoor smart security camera with cloud storage, two-way audio, and a two-year battery life. On Prime Day, you can buy two Blink XT2 cams for $100, a savings of $80.

Other Deals

Some other items that will be (or are already are) on sale for Prime Day that would help you round out your smart home include:

Smart Headphones

The Jabra Elite 85h Wireless Noise-Canceling Headphones ($300) are one of the exclusive Prime Day launches available only to Prime Members. They have eight built-in microphones, so Alexa will hear you loud and clear.

Dog Camera

The Furbo Dog camera will be 32% off so that you can keep an eye on your pets and even give them treats when you’re not around.

Router

Netgear routers, many of which work with Alexa, will be on sale for up to 30% off. Save up to 30% on Netgear routers

Smart Garage Hub

This bundle includes the myQ Smart Garage Door Opener and an Amazon Cloud Cam. With it, you’ll be able to operate your garage door remotely and allow Amazon to deliver packages in your garage securely. For less than $100, it’s a great deal.

How to Shop

To make it easy, we’ve compiled all of these items onto a shopping list. Check it often as many of these items may go on sale during the days leading up to Prime Day. When the clock strikes 3 a.m. on July 15, use the list to quickly add items to your cart if and when a deal goes live.

Of course, you’ll need to be a Prime member to access any of these deals. If you’re not a member, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial (or six months if you’re a student) that will last through Prime Day.

Deals are accurate as of 7/12/2019
