What You Should Know About the Largest Car Insurance Companies

The largest car insurance companies are some of the most recognizable names in the auto insurance industry. The top 15 alone have almost 80% of the market share, and the top four have just over 50%.  

Larger insurers tend to have financial strength you can rely on and the budget to provide better online tools, customer service, and claims support. But just because you’ve heard of an insurer, it doesn’t mean they’ll be the right fit for your insurance needs. Some of the largest insurers didn’t make the cut for our Best Car Insurance Companies list.

To help you choose a provider that’s right for you, here’s what you need to know about the largest auto insurance companies.

1. State Farm

  • Pros: Rideshare coverage and good customer service ratings
  • Cons: Average claims satisfaction ratings
  • Good for: Uber and Lyft drivers

In addition to thousands of agents available to help, State Farm offers online tools to begin and manage your coverage. While its customer service scores are mainly positive, its claims ratings are notably average. Although often not the cheapest option, if you’re looking for more policy options, like rideshare coverage, it’s worth getting a quote from State Farm.

Topping the chart as the biggest car insurer by almost $10 billion, State Farm dominates the auto insurance industry. The sheer size of State Farm’s business means it’s likely to be available in your area. It has nearly 18,000 agents and operates in all 50 states (although as of September 2019, State Farm isn’t accepting new policies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island). 

2. Geico

  • Pros: Affordable quotes, helpful online and mobile tools, and a range of discounts 
  • Cons: Average claims satisfaction and customer service ratings
  • Good for: Anyone looking for “DIY policy management”

You may know Geico for its gecko mascot and funny commercials, but it’s also recognized for its affordability. As one of the largest insurers, Geico is able to offer a variety of discounts, even some that aren’t as common, like discounts for federal employees, seniors, and even student drivers.

Geico’s online and mobile tools also help set it apart from other car insurance companies. J.D. Power named Geico number one in its 2019 digital experience survey. With a strong mobile app and plenty of information to help users through the process, Geico has advantages for new insurance buyers. 

Something to keep in mind when making your decision on auto insurance is Geico’s mediocre customer service scores. If a high level of support is important to you, Geico may not be the right fit, but if this isn’t your first rodeo with car insurance and you’re confident navigating the process on your own, get a quote from Geico.

3. Progressive

  • Pros: Simple online quotes, customizable coverage, and useful discount options
  • Cons: Average customer service and claims satisfaction ratings
  • Good for: Easy quote comparison

Progressive is a good place to start shopping around for your auto insurance. Its online quote tools, like a sliding price scale, allow you to customize your coverage level and compare competitor rates all on their site. 

But just because Progressive insurance is easy to get, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be easy to use. Progressive’s scores for claims handling and customer service are only average. Most of the largest insurers fell in this range, so it shouldn’t be a dealbreaker, but it may affect your experience. You can also weigh this average performance in customer satisfaction with Progressive’s accessible discounts, like going paperless. Progressive claims “99% of our auto customers earn at least one discount.”

4. Allstate

  • Pros: Resources and discounts for new drivers and helpful online and mobile tools
  • Cons: Variable customer service ratings
  • Good for: Families with teen and student drivers

Throughout its marketing messages, Allstate prides itself on protection, even offering a Claim Satisfaction Guarantee in 40+ states. While its claims satisfaction scores are average when compared to other industry leaders, its customer service ratings vary widely based on region.

If you’re looking for a well established company that offers resources and discounts, even for new drivers, it’s worth getting a quote from Allstate. You may be able to find the same coverage for a better rate elsewhere, but the highly rated online and mobile tools that Allstate provides make checking a simple process.

Included in Allstate’s market share is business by its subsidiary, Esurance, which made it onto our Best Auto Insurance Companies list thanks to its helpful online resources. 

5. USAA

  • Pros: Affordable quotes, excellent customer service and claims satisfaction ratings, and useful online and mobile tools
  • Cons: Only available to active or retired military
  • Good for: Military families

USAA is not only one of the largest, but also one of the best overall car insurance providers available – if you qualify. Dedicated to serving past and present members of the U.S. military and their families, consumer studies have continuously confirmed USAA’s unrivaled level of customer service and claims handling. 

And this support typically doesn’t come with a hefty price tag. Rates will vary person to person, but USAA reports that it was actually able to save members an average of $707 on their annual premium when switching from another provider. If you’re eligible, we recommend that you check out USAA’s quotes using its user-friendly online or mobile tools.

6. Liberty Mutual

  • Pros: Simple quote process and thorough policy offerings
  • Cons: Below average claims satisfaction ratings
  • Good for: Families with student drivers

Currently providing coverage in all 50 states, Liberty Mutual is one of the most widely available car insurers in the U.S. Liberty Mutual makes it easy to get coverage wherever you are with a simple online quote process, and you may end up with a competitive quote depending on which discounts you qualify for.

Liberty Mutual provides solid policy offerings, including both traditional coverages and some less common options, such as roadside assistance and gap insurance. When considering quotes from Liberty Mutual, however, be sure to take into account its lower-than-average claims satisfaction scores. It landed in the bottom tier of auto insurers ranked by J.D. Power’s 2018 consumer survey.

7. Farmers

  • Pros: Highly rated claims process, range of available add-ons, and great online and mobile tools
  • Cons: Customer service ratings vary
  • Good for: Those looking for unique coverage and discounts

Farmers, like Liberty Mutual, is also available in all 50 states, but, unlike its competitor, received one of the top spots on the same J.D. Power claims satisfaction survey. Farmers was also ranked third for digital experience, so if easy to use mobile and online tools are important to you, Farmers is a good company to consider.

Along with helpful policy management tools, Farmers offers plenty of opportunity to add on coverage and customize your policy. It even offers some unique additional coverages that may appeal to your situation. Farmers customer service ratings vary, but hover about industry average. 

8. Nationwide

  • Pros: Lots of coverage options and helpful policy management tools
  • Cons: Poor mobile tools
  • Good for: Someone seeking plenty of policy offerings with add-ons 

While Nationwide is widely available in the U.S., servicing 48 states and Washington, DC, it falls just short of being literally ‘nationwide’. Nationwide does offer the ability to customize your coverage and has a compelling family plan, but it’s missing rideshare options and is generally short on discounts. 

Similar to Allstate, Nationwide may not be the cheapest provider and you may find a lower quote for the same coverage elsewhere. When comparing quotes, though, keep in mind that Nationwide has scored relatively well in claims satisfaction, so the claims process might be easier with Nationwide if you ever have to file a claim.

9. Travelers 

  • Pros: Thorough coverage options
  • Cons: Poor claims satisfaction ratings
  • Good for: New drivers and those looking for varied coverage options

Travelers  is known for its thorough coverage options and ample discounts. With add-ons such as accident forgiveness and student driver discounts, this is a good company for families with new drivers to consider. Notably, however, Travelers does not offer a discount for safety features, unlike many other insurers, so it’s important to compare Traveler’s coverage and cost with other options. 

When weighing cost, keep in mind that Travelers has lower than average claims satisfaction scores from J.D. Power. Even if your quote comes back with enough discounts to make up for the missing safety discount, consider the importance of claims support in the event of an incident.

10. American Family

  • Pros: Variety of discounts and average customer service and claims satisfaction ratings
  • Cons: Limited availability
  • Good for: Unique discounts 

As we move down the list of market share giants, it’s not surprising that the tenth largest is available in fewer areas. American Family is significantly more focused, offering coverage in only 19 states, mostly in the midwest and north west, but if it’s available in your area it may be worth requesting a quote. 

American Family offers a wide array of discounts, including ones that are harder to find, like discounts for federal employees and young volunteers. It’s also performed in the middle of the pack in customer service and claims satisfaction ratings.

11. Auto Club Insurance

  • Pros: Discounts for AAA members and generally positive customer service ratings
  • Cons: Coverage varies by state 
  • Good for: AAA members

Auto Club Insurance (AAA) is a group of local clubs run on a state-by-state basis so individual clubs will offer different coverages and rates. (It’s practically impossible to get on their site without specifying your zip code.) Overall, though, ratings of Auto Club Insurance and its local clubs are mainly positive, and there are discounts available if you’re an existing AAA member.

12. Erie

  • Pros: Excellent customer service and claims satisfaction ratings
  • Cons: Limited availability and poor online and mobile experience
  • Good for: Someone looking for quality of service over price

Another company where you’ll want to check availability first, Erie offers policies in 12 states in the northeast and Washington, DC. If you’re in an eligible area, though, it is a good provider to request a quote from if claims support is important to you.

Erie’s strong reputation for top-notch customer satisfaction is reflected in J.D. Power’s 2019 Customer Satisfaction survey where it claimed the top spot for the Mid-Atlantic region. One area where Erie falls short, however, is their digital experience, which tied for last place in the 2019 J.D. Power Digital Experience study.

13. Kemper

  • Pros: Accident forgiveness and a disappearing deductible option
  • Cons: Poor customer service ratings and outdated online quote tool 
  • Good for: Based on our standards, we would not recommend this insurer

Kemper, formerly Unitirin, may be one of the auto industry giants lesser-known to consumers. It offers attractive add-ons, like accident forgiveness and disappearing deductible, but doesn’t offer a very user-friendly online quote tool to help you learn about your coverage options. 

Rates will vary based on your unique circumstances, but keep in mind that an affordable quote shouldn’t be your only consideration. Kemper’s NAIC complaints ratio has been rising in recent years, with a spike in 2018 driven by claims handling and policyholder service issues. 

14. National General

  • Pros: Wide availability
  • Cons: Outdated and cumbersome online tools 
  • Good for: Based on our standards, we would not recommend this insurer

National General is another name that may be new to many consumers. Despite their similar names, it’s not associated with The General. National General underwent a name change in 2013, rebranding from GMAC Insurance. Coverage is available everywhere in the U.S., with the exception of Hawaii and Massachusetts, but the online quote process is relatively cumbersome. If their system can’t find you, you have to add your SSN to access a quote. That said, they do have agents available by phone to help you.

Along with Kemper, National General is also another insurer where the customer complaints ratio raises red flags. In 2016, it received 10.6 times more complaints than the industry average. The good news is its recent numbers are headed in the right direction, but this is something to be aware of as you compare quotes.

15. CSAA

  • Pros: Available AAA membership discounts and extra coverages
  • Cons: Low customer satisfaction ratings
  • Good for: Based on our standards, we would not recommend this insurer

Just like Auto Club Insurance, CSAA is affiliated with AAA so availability and discounts are heavily dependent on your location. It’s a financially strong insurer with good membership discounts if you belong to AAA, but unlike Auto Club, its overall customer satisfaction scores are mainly negative.
