The Good

Great for households with high Internet usage

RCN’s combination of fast download and upload speeds makes them an excellent choice for households where there are multiple people who are using the Internet at the same time. Their speeds ensure that you can watch videos and upload photos without having to wait a long time for them to load. If you anticipate having several devices connected to the Internet, and don’t want to sacrifice performance, RCN is a solid choice.

Affordable plans

RCN offers low introductory rates on all of their cable Internet packages. They have four different plans available, so finding one that offers the speeds you need without exceeding your price range shouldn’t be too difficult. Even if price isn’t your main concern when shopping for a cable Internet provider, you still can benefit from how much RCN offers for such a reasonable price.

Free modem available

If you speak to a representative at RCN, you may be able to get your modem for free with your Internet plan. Almost all cable Internet companies require you to either purchase your equipment or pay a monthly lease fee so this is a nice bonus. Fees to lease modems are often only a few dollars per month, but everything adds up over time and you could be saving yourself quite a bit of money if you plan on having your Internet service for long time.

The Bad

Only services a few cities

RCN’s service area is rather limited compared to some other companies in the industry. They only service a few major cities across the country, including Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. It’s good news if you live in one of these areas because RCN has a decent amount to offer, but the majority of the population is never likely to experience RCN.

Bundles must include TV

RCN offers some excellent bundle deals for TV and Internet service as well as three-service bundles, but there is no way to bundle just your cable Internet and phone services. If you already have a satellite TV provider or you simply stream your shows and movies online, you can’t get phone and Internet unless a TV package is included. So these two things would have to be purchased separately and without a discount. It’s not a major negative, but something to be aware of if you plan on signing up for RCN.
