Boost Mobile Review

Boost Mobile's unlimited prepaid phone plans will appeal to heavy cell phone users who want to keep costs low without sacrificing quality. You have to buy a new device when you sign up, but they do have a nice selection of the latest smartphones to choose from.

The Good

Phones for every lifestyle and budget

Whether your phone’s just for emergencies or you use it all the time, Boost Mobile’s array of new and pre-owned phones is sure to have something you’ll like. If you’re looking to keep costs down, opting for a pre-owned phone is the way to go. There are a number of different models you can choose from, many of which are under $75. For those who enjoy having the latest technology, Boost Mobile offers the newest iPhone and Android models and even a BlackBerry or two. Of course, keep in mind these phones are considerably more expensive.

Get rewarded for paying on time

Boost Mobile’s shrinking payments program rewards you for paying on time six months in a row by shrinking your monthly payments by $5. You can lower your payments up to $15 per month this way and, depending on how long you stay with Boost Mobile, this could add up to some serious savings. Use it to pay your next month’s bill or for a new phone. You’re still receiving the same service but at a much lower price. If your budget is a big factor in which prepaid phone company you choose, Boost Mobile is a good one to consider.

Easy to refill your account

With Boost Mobile, you can refill your account through their auto re-boost program or with a one-time payment. The automatic payment program uses your debit or credit card and refills your account as needed. All you have to do is register your card online to get started. If you decide you’d rather make one-time payments when necessary, you have a few options. You can pay using your credit or debit card online or from your cell phone. Certain retail locations also allow you to re-boost in person if this is more convenient for you. Use Boost Mobile’s store locator tool on their website to find a retail location in your area.

Trade in your old phone

If you have an old phone you’d like to get rid of, Boost Mobile will buy it from you and credit your account so you can put that money toward a new phone. How much they give you depends on what kind of phone you have, and there’s a quote tool on their website to see how much you’d get back. Just print the shipping label and send the device to Boost Mobile and they credit your account. It’s a great way to earn some extra cash if you haven’t quite saved up enough for that new phone yet.

The Bad

Can't pay as you go

Boost Mobile offers monthly and daily unlimited plans but no way to buy minutes as needed. Those who don’t want to worry about overages will appreciate the lack of limitations on calls and texts. But, if you don’t use your phone that often, paying for an unlimited plan doesn’t make as much sense. A pay-as-you-go plan is much more flexible and better suited to these individuals. If you’re interested in one of these plans, you should look into companies like T-Mobile and Straight Talk.

Must purchase a new phone

In order to sign up for a Boost Mobile plan, you must purchase a new phone from them since they don’t allow customers to bring their own devices. A few other prepaid phone companies have this restriction as well, but the majority of companies are perfectly willing to let you keep your old phone as long as it’s compatible. If you like your old cell phone or just don’t have the money to buy a new one right now, it’s not a bad idea to keep shopping around. However, keep in mind Boost Mobile sells a few pre-owned models that should fit easily into many budgets.

Difficult to speak to a live person

When you contact Boost Mobile by phone, you’re met with a series of automated menus which direct you to the right department. If you aren’t already a customer, though, it can be difficult to navigate their phone tree and speak to a live representative. However, when we did eventually speak to someone about their services, they were very helpful and able to answer all our questions.
