Kajeet Review

Kajeet's strong parental controls make them an excellent choice for your child's first cell phone. While they are missing a few basic services, Kajeet's prepaid plans can be customized with a multitude of add-on options.

The Good

Parents stay informed of children's activities

Kajeet prepaid phones come equipped with a number of parental controls, which can be easily changed through your online account. These controls are perfect for parents who want the peace of mind that comes with knowing their child can contact them when necessary but are concerned about inappropriate use or overuse of the technology. You can set time limits on when your child is allowed to use their phone and also track their whereabouts using its GPS technology. If you’d like, you can also receive email notifications when your child arrives at a designed location. In addition, you can block certain numbers or features on your kid’s phone as needed.

Plans for all kinds of users

If you’re looking to get your child a phone just for emergencies, you may be fine with the Kid Starter plan, which comes with 10 anytime minutes for $4.99 per month. Any text messages or minutes over 10 will cost an additional $0.10 each, and there are also extra charges for data use. For those looking to give their kids a little more freedom, there are several plans that offer more minutes and unlimited texting for as low as $14.99 per month. Smartphone users have to pay a little more, but they also get higher data allowances.

Customize plans with add-ons

Add-ons are a valuable option for those who like their plans but want higher limits in one or more areas. Frequent texters may want to pay a few extra dollars per month to have their texting limits raised. You can also do the same for mobile web usage. There are a number of different packages you can choose from, so you don’t have to pay for more than you need. Special night and weekend minutes, which can be used from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays, can also be purchased for under $10 per month. Not everyone will be interested in these add-ons, but they’re a good way to customize your plan without paying too much extra.

Good selection of prepaid phones

Kajeet offers a number of basic and Android phones for you to purchase for use with your prepaid phone plan. You also have the option to get a refurbished phone, which helps lower costs. If you purchase online, you may be able to take advantage of special discounts that can save you even more. If none of the phones Kajeet offers appeal to you, you always have the option to bring your own compatible Sprint device. Activating the device is free, so the only thing you have to pay is the monthly fee for your plan. Bringing your own phone not only gives you a wider selection of phones to choose from, but it also saves you quite a bit of money since prepaid plans often require you to pay the full price of your phone.

The Bad

Limited phone functionality

Although Kajeet phones enable you to make calls and send and receive text messages, they’re missing some other common features like call waiting. Three-way calling is also impossible on these devices, as is video messaging. Almost all other companies offer call waiting and three-way calling. Video messaging is a little harder to find, but there are still plenty of prepaid phone providers that offer it as well.

Can't make international calls

In order to make an international call from a Kajeet phone, you need to use a calling card. There’s also no way to send or receive text messages from international numbers. Again, this shouldn’t be an issue for the majority of individuals, but it’s something you should be aware of when making your decision. If, for some reason, you or your child who’s using the Kajeet phone needs to make an international call now and again, it might be better to select a different provider, like TracFone.

Must refill account online

Many other prepaid phone companies give you the option to top up your account from your mobile phone or in person at a retail location, but with Kajeet, your only choice is online. This shouldn’t be too big of an issue, but if there comes a point when you’re away from a computer and you need to top up your account, you’ll be out of luck. You’ll be charged access and per-minute fees until you’ve remedied the situation. If you’re concerned, you can always sign up for their auto top-up program.
