The Good

Customize a plan to suit your needs

OpenDrive gives their customers the unique option to design their own cloud storage plan with custom storage limits and bandwidth caps. Choose from personal or business plans and add as many users as you want, up to 1,000. It’s important to note, though, that you pay an additional charge for every user beyond the first. Storage limits range from 100GB to 5TB and you always have the option to upgrade if you need to. These plans are ideal if you want more storage space than you get with OpenDrive’s free plan but don’t feel like you need an unlimited plan. Custom plans contain all the same features of the personal or business unlimited plan depending on what type of account you choose to set up.

Conveniently edit within the cloud

All of OpenDrive’s plans include a number of online tools for managing your files, including the ability to edit documents without downloading them to your computer. This isn’t something found with the majority of cloud storage services, but it certainly has its uses. Changes are automatically synced to all of your devices and you don’t have to wait for the file to download first before you can start making edits. Plus, when collaborating with a team, there’s no wondering whether you’re looking at the latest file because there’s no need to re-upload the document every time a change is made.

Access files from smartphones and tablets

OpenDrive’s mobile apps possess many of the same capabilities as the desktop apps, including the option to upload, share, and edit your files. You don’t even have to be connected to the Internet. Save the desired documents to your phone and view them whenever you want through the app. If you’ve saved music or videos to the OpenDrive cloud, you’re able to stream these to your phone without downloading them, which is something that most cloud storage apps don’t offer. Individuals who spend a lot of time away from their computers are going to get some real use out of mobile tools, so powerful apps like these are a huge plus.

Schedule backups whenever you want

OpenDrive allows you to schedule backups on your own time so you don’t have to worry about your uploads slowing down your Internet when you need to use it. Initially, OpenDrive is set to automatically sync any changes you make to your files with the cloud so the latest versions are always accessible on any device. If you don’t feel this is necessary, switch over to manual backups or set up a schedule so changes are synced once per day or once per week. Pausing a sync until a later time is another option to consider. This is particularly useful when you’re initially backing up files because it’ll probably take a while and could have a negative impact on your Internet speeds; waiting until you’re not using the computer helps avoid this issue.

Store files of any size

While the free plan only handles files of 100MB or less, OpenDrive’s paying customers have no limits on how small their files must be in order to be uploaded to the cloud. If you work with videos or other large files on a regular basis, this is great news. Many other online storage providers have restrictions on file size that make it impossible to store these large files, so OpenDrive’s unlimited plan is very valuable. This shouldn’t be a crucial factor for most people when choosing a cloud storage provider, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind while researching your options.

Increase productivity with content management tools

Administrators have full control over employee accounts within OpenDrive, as they’re able to decide how much storage space and bandwidth each user gets and what files and folders they can edit. Rather than adjusting permissions for every individual user, there’s also the option to create user groups and adjust permissions for the entire group. Tracking files is easy, too. Set up notifications for when files are modified so you always stay up to date on the latest changes. OpenDrive also allows businesses to customize the program interface with their own company logo and color scheme. This should appeal to most organizations, particularly those who plan on sharing files with their clients through OpenDrive.

The Bad

Uploads take a while for Basic users

If you go with the Basic plan from OpenDrive, your bandwidth is limited to 200KB per second, which is going to affect how long it takes to upload and download files. The larger the file you’re trying to upload, the more noticeable this limitation will be. For most people, though, it shouldn’t be a make-or-break factor when choosing a cloud storage provider. If it’s a problem for you, consider upgrading to OpenDrive’s unlimited plan or designing a custom plan with a higher bandwidth limit.
