The Bad

Missing some contact importing options

Unlike some other companies that offer a variety of flexible tools for importing contacts, iContact only accepts data stored in a couple different spreadsheet formats. If you’re lucky enough to have your contacts stored in a tidy XLS or CSV file, or if you know how to convert your contacts into one of these file formats, you shouldn’t have any trouble at all getting your data into the iContact system. However, if your contacts are stored in another file format, in an online customer management database, or in your email account, you won’t get much help from iContact, which can be pretty annoying if you don’t happen to be a database expert. These limitations are a little surprising given how well iContact performs in other technical areas of email marketing, and it would be nice to see the company offer a little more flexibility to customers in this area.

Image library limited to 5MB free space

In order to add your own logos and images to your email campaigns, you have to host the files in the iContact system. Although the company provides five megabytes of free storage space, this is really not enough to meet the needs of users who send out regular email campaigns, especially if your campaigns feature product image galleries, staff photos, and customized graphics. Although you can upgrade your account to get more storage, this adds to your monthly costs. For example, to upgrade to a 10MB image library, you’re charged an additional 10% on top of your regular monthly fee. For 25 megabytes of storage space, you pay 20% extra. If you do plan to insert your own images into your campaigns, it’s important to consider this factor when comparing costs for different email marketing services.
