Manhattan Prep GMAT Review

Manhattan Prep offers a variety of GMAT prep-course options to suit the lifestyle of just about any student. However, private tutoring from one of their highly qualified instructors may not work for smaller budgets.

The Good

Multiple course styles to choose from

Manhattan Prep’s Complete Course is available online or in person and is the most popular GMAT prep course the company offers. In this program, you receive 27 hours of in-class instruction and 27 hours of homework tutoring in addition to six practice tests and a number of online supplementary materials. If this type of learning environment doesn’t appeal to you, though, there are several other options. Sign up for private tutoring if you feel you’d benefit from more personalized instruction or go with the self-study course if you’d rather learn on your own timeline. Students whose test dates are rapidly approaching may want to explore the Boot Camp Course instead. This is a highly focused and intense GMAT prep course that lasts two weeks and includes 35 hours of in-person instruction. Manhattan Prep also offers workshops that deal exclusively with one specific section of the exam, and one of these may be a more cost-effective solution for you if you’re only struggling with one area of the test.

Highly qualified instructors

Individuals who want to become a Manhattan Prep instructor must go through a rigorous hiring process and extensive on-the-job training before they’re allowed to teach any classes. All instructors have scored in the 99th percentile on the official GMAT exam, meaning they’ve earned a score of 760 or higher out of a possible 800 points. They also have at least two years of teaching experience prior to being hired by Manhattan Prep and undergo more than 100 hours of training to ensure they possess the knowledge and skills to help students succeed on the GMAT exam. This is an often overlooked factor when choosing a GMAT prep course, but the quality of your instructors makes a big difference in how engaging the lessons are and how well you learn the material. If you go with Manhattan Prep, you can be sure you’re dealing with the best of the best.

Free classes and networking events

Manhattan Prep provides a number of free events to their current and prospective students to help them learn more about the GMAT exam and what they need to do to get into their dream business school. Students who are new to the GMAT exam should look into attending one of Manhattan Prep’s free GMAT preview sessions where you learn about the format of the exam and strategies you can use to earn a higher score. There’s also a Trial Class, which gives you a feel for what you’ll get if you sign up for their full-length GMAT prep course. Manhattan Prep also hosts admissions seminars with their partner organization mbaMission and networking events to help you gain the knowledge and connections you need to succeed in business school and your future career. Not all GMAT prep course providers offer these types of free events to their students, so this is something to keep in mind when considering which company you want to go with.

Excellent online study materials

Manhattan Prep has a special section of their website dedicated to providing students with free study tools, like flash cards, and information about the format of the exam and how to study for it. Their blog contains helpful strategies for every portion of the test and, if you don’t find the answer to your question here, head over to the GMAT forums and ask fellow students and instructors. Get some hands-on practice with a free full-length sample test and the Challenge Problem of the Month. In addition, Manhattan Prep provides five integrated reasoning video lessons and, every Thursday, there’s a free hour-and-a-half study session covering topics students have suggested. These resources may not be the equivalent of a full GMAT prep course, but they do give you a feel for how Manhattan Prep’s courses work and whether they’re right for you.

The Bad

Expensive tutoring rates

Compared to the rest of the industry, Manhattan Prep’s hourly tutoring rates are relatively expensive, averaging around $255 per hour with a 2 hour minimum. If your budget is tight, this could be a deal breaker. However, it’s important to remember you’re getting a lot for your money, including customized instruction from some of the best GMAT tutors around. If the price is still too big of an obstacle for you, that doesn’t mean you need to cross Manhattan Prep off your list. Their Complete Course offers you comprehensive instruction on all aspects of the exam at a much more affordable price, so it’s still worth considering.

No course guarantees

Manhattan Prep makes no promises about how much your GMAT score will improve once you’ve taken one of their prep courses, nor will they refund your money if you don’t see the progress you expected. This isn’t uncommon among GMAT test prep providers and it shouldn’t be a major cause for concern; however, it would be nice to see Manhattan Prep back their product with a guarantee to give their students a little peace of mind. If you’re interested in this type of guarantee, check out a company like Kaplan. They allow any student who doesn’t improve their score to either retake the course or receive a full refund.
