MLIC Review

While MLIC's online and on-site course options are quite solid, they do not offer the breadth of interactive learning materials and study tools found at other top GRE prep companies.

The Good

Flexible online course options

MLIC online GRE prep courses are available in several different formats, including a standard course, an accelerated course, and a custom course. The standard online MLIC GRE prep course includes 120 hours of training in six to eight weeks, depending on how quickly you complete the self-study portions of the training. Virtual classes are held each week for the first six weeks of the course. The accelerated online MLIC GRE prep course is a good option if you need to prepare for a fast-approaching test date. This course includes the very same content as the standard course, but follows a compressed four-week schedule. The custom course option is for students who want concentrated training in a narrow aspect of the GRE. You work one-on-one with an MLIC instructor to design a course that meets your special needs. The custom course is a great option if you have trouble with one of the three GRE content areas: the quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing sections. Custom courses are designed to be completed in three or four weeks.

Uniquely structured on-site course

If you’re a self-starter and live near one of the 11 U.S. cities served by MLIC, the company’s on-site course is well worth a look. The course consists of three components, including a classroom-based portion and two self-study portions. You begin the initial training portion of the class about four to six weeks before classroom training begins. Initial training requires you to review study materials and complete assignments designed to teach you the basics of the GRE. The second portion of the course includes 42 hours of classroom training with five to nine other students. This portion is designed to elevate your understanding of GRE concepts and strategies, and to improve your test-taking abilities. Course sessions are designed to be interactive and require you and your classmates to demonstrate your understanding of class material continuously throughout the course periods. The third and final portion of the course is composed primarily of timed practice tests and practice exercises designed to solidify your knowledge and sharpen your test-taking skills. You must participate in at least one online review seminar during this portion of the course. You are also entitled to online and telephone review sessions with your course instructor.

Test score guarantee

All MLIC students in standard and accelerated courses are covered by the company’s GRE test score guarantee, which promises a combined GRE score of at least 310 points out of the 340 points possible on the quantitative and verbal reasoning sections of the test. The analytical writing section score is not included in the score guarantee, although you do study the section thoroughly as an MLIC student. If you fail to reach 310 points after successfully completing all MLIC course requirements, you are entitled to additional free training until you achieve a score of 310 points.

The Bad

Few online learning materials

Although you get access to hard-copy study materials, practice tests, and practice exercises, the quantity of materials available is somewhat limited when compared to other GRE prep companies. Kaplan, for example, provides you with access to a database containing thousands of example quiz questions, in addition to a host of content drilling tools and interactive learning games. Most students gain a lot by utilizing these types of materials, especially when provided in a convenient online format.

No on-demand courses

If you’re interested in taking an on-demand GRE course made up of prerecorded, streaming video lectures and self-study materials, MLIC is not the answer for you. Among all of the best national GRE prep companies, MLIC is the only one that does not offer an on-demand, self-paced course. There are plenty of other good options out there, however, including those offered by TestMasters and Manhattan Review, among others.

No admissions prep services

Many GRE prep companies offer training and help in preparing graduate school applications and getting ready for admissions interviews. Some prep companies offer online and on-site seminars and even private consultations. MLIC offers none of these services. Although this is probably a rather minor issue, if you’re interested in learning more about the admissions process as part of your GRE preparation, take a look at some other companies.
