The Good

Excellent trip cancellation and interruption coverage

MH Ross reimburses you for 100% of your trip costs if you have to cancel due to an emergency situation. They cover all of the standard reasons, like natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and death of the insured or a family member. They also offer coverage for other events not usually included in a travel insurance policy, such as childbirth and work-related cancellations. Optional Cancel for Any Reason coverage is available with select plans as well. Cutting your trip short can sometimes end up being more expensive than canceling a trip entirely, so, depending on which plan you choose, you can be reimbursed for up to 200% of your original trip costs if you need to leave your trip early due to an unforeseen event.

Several plans to choose from

Unlike some other travel insurance providers, MH Ross doesn’t limit your options to one or two plans and instead gives you seven to choose from. The Asset plan provides a basic level of coverage that’s perfect if you’re on a budget, while the Complete plan offers some of the strongest travel insurance protection available, including 200% trip interruption coverage. There is also the Explorer series plans, which provide similar services but with slightly different coverage limits. And if you’re traveling with a large group, it’s a good idea to contact MH Ross about their special plans for groups of 10 or more.

Extra coveage for personal property

If you’re willing to pay a little extra, MH Ross enables you to purchase additional coverage for your personal belongings so you’re reimbursed in the event they are lost, stolen, or damaged. This type of coverage can be extremely valuable because standard personal property protection often doesn’t offer enough to cover devices like laptops and smartphones and some plans don’t cover them at all. With MH Ross travel insurance, you can get $1,000 of coverage for computers, smartphones, business property, and more. You pay a $100 deductible, but it could be worth it to get the extra coverage and the peace of mind that comes with it.

Assistance for business travelers

If you have to travel for work, MH Ross travel insurance is a good company to choose because they offer a number of special services directed at business travelers, including assistance with conference calls or web conferencing. They can also help you locate business services in your area, including print and copy shops and Internet cafes. In addition, MH Ross keeps you updated on the weather conditions of where you’re headed and lets you know about any delays that might impact your travel schedule. Not everyone will have need for these services, but there’s no denying their usefulness if you’re traveling for business purposes.

Additional coverage for sports

If you plan on participating in any contact or extreme sports on your vacation, MH Ross is a good company for you to look at because you can purchase additional coverage for these types of activities. Many travel insurance providers don’t cover injuries resulting from skydiving, bungee jumping, and the like, but these injuries can be extremely expensive. If you know you’re going to be participating in one of these activities, it’s not a bad idea to pay a little extra for some additional coverage.

The Bad

Doesn't insure long trips

MH Ross only insures trips of 120 days or less, about one-third of what the majority of travel insurance companies cover. Most trips won’t last nearly this long, but if you do have to be away for more than four months, it’s probably best to select a different insurance provider who can offer you more comprehensive protection. Allianz and TravelSafe Insurance are good options because both insure trips over one year in length.

Age limits low on some plans

Although some MH Ross travel insurance plans cover individuals up to the age of 120, these are typically the more expensive plans. Their most affordable plan, the Asset plan, only insures people 65 and under. If you’re traveling with an older individual, it may not be ideal to purchase a more expensive plan when all you need is a basic level of coverage. In this case, it’s a good idea to keep your options open and check out some other companies, though this shouldn’t be a big issue for most.
