Duquesne University Review
Duquesne University is a private Catholic university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school offers a decent selection of bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees, but is known for their top online nursing program.
Quality online nursing program:
Duquesne University has a well-respected, nationally recognized online nursing program with several different degree options at both master’s and PhD levels. The online master of science in nursing degree offers three different specialty options including family nurse practitioner, forensic nursing, and nursing education. More advanced degrees include a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) and a PhD in nursing. The DNP degree is practice focused and prepares you for leadership in clinical settings, while the nursing PhD degree focuses on research and requires you to write a dissertation.
Duquesne University was established more than 130 years ago and has been offering online degrees for nearly 15 years. The online programs receive respectable ratings in the recent U.S. News & World Report survey, and the university itself is listed as one of Princeton Review’s 2014 Best 378 Colleges. They still have a lot of work to do to be included among the top-tier schools, but overall Duquesne has a decent reputation.
No time limit to complete degree:
The school does not have a time limit on the number of years you can take to complete your online degree. Many programs at traditional campus schools and many online colleges require that you complete all of your degree requirements within five or six years, at the most. However, Duquesne University does not have any such limit and you can work away at your degree for as long that is necessary for you. The flexibility of no time limit can be extra helpful if you are attempting an online degree at a part-time pace while working full-time.
Not available in every state:
Changes in higher education regulations have made Duquesne University unable to accept applicants for their online degrees who live in Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. These types of regulations have affected state availability of several online colleges and this is not entirely unusual. If you happen to live in one of the states named in this list, keep an eye out for future changes as regulations can change at any time. However, there are many other online colleges that accept students from every state and do not have any residency limitations.
On-campus components may be required:
Some of the online degree programs offered at Duquesne University may require you to schedule visits to the school’s campus in Pittsburgh. For example, the online nursing degree has coursework which can be completed entirely online, but you must make campus visits to demonstrate certain competencies. While this actually only improves the quality of instruction and experience you can gain as an online student, it can be a huge hassle to have to regularly make scheduled visits to a physical campus. If you do not live within reasonable traveling distance to the school, certain online programs at Duquesne University may not work for you.
Student services are lacking:
The school does not offer certain online tools and student services to prospective and active online students. The online campus section of Duquesne University is not entirely helpful or informative to prospective online students, which can be frustrating when you are doing initial research about the school. Additionally, as an online student you do not have access to 24/7 tech support, a common service available at many other online schools. The absence of these services does not directly affect the instruction and education you receive as an online student, but there is definitely room for the school to amp up its online presence and tools.
