East Carolina University Review
East Carolina University is a large, public school that offers a high number of graduate degrees with historical strengths in education, nursing, and business programs.
Large selection of graduate degree offerings:
East Carolina University (ECU) offers a total of 22 different master’s degrees, many of which include multiple areas of further concentration. The advanced degree options available at ECU include an MBA, master’s and doctorate of nursing degrees, education degrees, and many technical degree areas including software engineering, technology systems, and network technology. There are still many other degrees beyond these, so no matter your field of interest, there is likely a graduate degree that is relevant to you and that can be earned entirely online through ECU.
Several undergraduate degree completion options:
While the school only offers an online bachelor’s degree completion program, the choice of majors does cover a variety of subjects. Some online colleges with degree completion programs only offer a general, liberal arts degree, or a small selection of specialized degrees. However, at ECU there are nine different bachelor’s degrees available, many with additional areas of concentration. If you are looking to complete a specific degree that you started elsewhere, there is a good chance that your past degree-specific credits can transfer to an ECU program.
Fair national rankings:
According to the most recent U.S. News & World Report, East Carolina University has earned three online education rankings. The online graduate nursing program earns an impressive number 5 ranking, and the online graduate business program earns a number 58 ranking. The online bachelor’s program earns a 141 ranking out of a total of 169 ranked programs, but inclusion on the list is still impressive considering the hundreds of online colleges that were evaluated to compile the rankings list. Rankings do not indicate everything, but these numbers show that ECU’s online programs are consistent and can compete with other online schools.
Some on-campus attendance may be required:
A few of the online master’s degrees available through East Carolina University will require you to commit to some on-campus attendance. Three of the graduate nursing degree options and the master’s in communication sciences and disorders each have some on-campus components. Considering the subject matter, an on-campus component makes sense, but you should take into account the travel commitment. For these select programs, ECU may not be the best online degree program if you do not live in close proximity to the school’s main campus location in Greenville, North Carolina.
Education degrees require current North Carolina teaching license:
The online master’s of arts in education degree offers 11 different concentrations, ten of which require you to currently hold a North Carolina teaching license. This requirement excludes you if you have a license in any other state. The adult education concentration is the only concentration that does not have any specific state restrictions. If you are seeking an advanced degree in education, there are a number of other online colleges that have master’s degrees available to anyone in any state.
Big tuition increase for out-of-state students:
It is quite common for public, state schools to have higher tuition rates for nonresidents, or out-of-state students, but the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition at East Carolina is quite a big gap. Several of the online degree programs at ECU seem to cater more to North Carolina residents, so be aware of these limitations if you are a nonresident.
