The Good

Offers a variety of areas of study:

Florida State University offers both online bachelor’s and online graduate degrees in a variety of fields and concentrations. The school offers four different majors for online bachelor’s students, including public safety, criminology, computer science, and interdisciplinary social science. The school’s online graduate degrees in business, education, and nursing also offer multiple concentrations, with each program offering between 2-5 areas of emphasis. The variety of academic disciplines offered at Florida State University means you are more likely to find a program that matches your specific interests, and you don’t have to settle for a generic degree.

Decent rankings and reputation:

The latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report have recognized Florida State University on four different lists for their online education offerings. The online graduate nursing program takes the best spot ranking at number 10, and the online graduate education program is ranked at number 61. Additionally, the online graduate business program comes in at number 43, and the online bachelor’s program is number 102 out of 160 similar ranked programs. Some of these rankings are not terribly high, but it is notable that the school has placed well for so many different online programs. The school has also gained recognition from The Princeton Review, and is generally recognized as one of Florida’s flagship state schools.

Economical tuition rates:

Florida State is consistently recognized as a great value for higher education, and has been ranked on the list of Princeton Review’s Best Value Public Colleges in 2013 and 2012. Additionally, the school was ranked quite high by Kiplinger’s 2013 Best Values in Public Colleges, coming in at number 23 for in-state tuition, and at number 33 for out-of-state tuition. Even though out-of-state students pay much higher tuition rates, this pricing is common among state universities and the education value holds well whether you have to pay in-state or out-of-state rates. Be sure to check tuition rates for your specific degree, as costs may vary between programs.

Keep on track with academic coordinators:

Online education completed remotely can have some students feeling disconnected from their school and their coursework, but Florida State University has put in place academic coordinators to keep you on track with your studies. Academic coordinators not only monitor your student progress, but they help you by making course recommendations and indicating any course equivalencies and substitutions you can make. Some online programs even may use mentors, who act like teaching assistants and a learning coach. Even though you may be completing your degree from a different state, Florida State University has put in place a strong online community to keep you connected and motivated.

The Bad

Only offers online bachelor's degree completion:

It is not entirely obvious at first glance, but some online schools only offer advanced standing or degree completion programs, and Florida State University is one of those schools. In order to enroll in the online bachelor’s program, you must already have 60 or more credit hours that are transferable to your degree program at Florida State University. You will not be able to earn an entire bachelor’s degree start to finish with the online program at Florida State University like you can with other online schools. One way to look at it is that all incoming online bachelor’s degree students are like transfer students starting on the second half of their degree in an online setting.

Proctored exams for online students:

Not every aspect of academic life can be completed in an online setting with Florida State University’s online programs. Some of the school’s online programs require that exams be taken at a proctored location, either on-campus or at another prearranged location. Some quizzes, exams, and other assessments can be done online, but be aware that some instructors require you to take exams at a location from somewhere other than the comfort of home. Instructors will give you plenty of notice, usually within the first week of the semester, if there is going to be any proctored testing during the semester.
