The Good

Many bachelor's and master's degree options:

The online bachelor’s program at Regent University offers more than ten different majors, which is a large selection as many online colleges only offer one or two undergraduate degree options. The school offers a selection of traditional majors like psychology, history, business, English, and criminal justice to name a few. There are also many graduate and a few PhD level degree options. Regent University offers nearly thirty master’s degree options, which includes three master’s degrees and two PhD options in religious studies. No matter your degree level or areas of interest, having access to such a large selection of degree options makes for a diverse academic experience.

Accelerated one-year programs:

Several of the online master’s degrees at Regent University are offered as an accelerated one-year program. Accelerated programs can be highly valuable if you are a working professional who wants to gain an advanced degree as quickly as possible in order to further your career. Also convenient, you can typically start a degree program in the fall, spring, or summer semester, so you don’t have to wait for a once-a-year new student start date. Not every online college offers accelerated programs, and some online schools that offer fast track programs are not the highest quality. The accelerated program offerings at Regent University can be a real advantage if you want to earn a high-quality degree fairly quickly.

Notable rankings:

Regent University has received several recognitions in the most current U.S. News & World Report rankings of online education programs. The online bachelor’s program earns the number 21 ranking from U.S. News & World Report, and the school’s online graduate education program makes it into the top 50. Rankings do not indicate everything, but the rankings for Regents show that they are one of the better online colleges around.

Networking/mentoring community:

Mentoring both during your studies and after graduation can be particularly valuable to remote, online students. Regent University has an excellent alumni association that goes beyond the usual career center, alumni directory, and fund-raising offerings. An online mentoring community makes it easy for online students feel more connected to the school, to their field of study, and to alumni. The online alumni association portal makes it easy to become or locate a mentor. As a mentee you can seek professional guidance and insight, though not necessarily job offers, directly from Regent University alumni.

The Bad

Some on-campus courses may be required:

Some of the school’s degree programs require you to take a few of the classes on campus. Additionally, certain programs are offered in a hybrid format where you can make the choice to take a blend of on-campus and online classes. While Regent University does offer many programs where the majority of coursework can be completed online, the school may only work best for you if you live within reasonable traveling distance to the school’s campus location in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Slightly higher tuition rates:

Regent University is not the most expensive online college, but its tuition rates do run on the higher side compared with many other top online colleges. In-state and out-of-state tuition rates are the same, but graduate credits are slightly more per unit than undergraduate credits, which is fairly standard for most schools. To help you with higher costs, the school does offer several forms of financial assistance including access to federal, state, private, and school-funded financial aid. Since Regent University is a private school, there may be greater chances of getting aid from donors and endowment sources, so the high cost may not actually be the case for all students.

Bachelor's program has low graduation rate:

Regent University boasts some fairly strong retention and graduation rates across most of their programs, but the online bachelor’s program is the one dark spot for the school. Bachelor’s programs can sometimes have lower retention and graduation rates since first-time degree-seeking students may require more motivation and encouragement to stay on top of their studies. The online bachelor’s program at Regent has reported graduation rates in the 20th and 30th percentiles for the last four academic years. These rates are lower than the graduation rates for any of their other programs and are much lower than the rate for bachelor’s programs at other online schools.
