The Good

Dual degree option with an MBA

The college of engineering and the college of business at Auburn University offer a dual degree in industrial systems and engineering (MISE) and business administration (MBA). The dual degree consists of a total 55 credits and you can complete coursework for both programs entirely online. Online dual degree programs are rare at the graduate level, and the combination of these two highly regarded degrees will prepare you for management positions. Most applicants have engineering or mathematics undergraduate backgrounds. If you meet application requirements to both programs and apply to each college separately, you have the choice to enter this program in the fall, spring, or summer term.

Affordable tuition rates

Auburn University hosts an online engineering program that is more affordable than most in terms of tuition and fees. Auburn charges the same flat tuition rate of $754 per credit to all online students, regardless of state residency. The makes the total cost of an online engineering degree at Auburn far below many other similar online programs. If you live outside of the state of Alabama, you will not pay a higher, nonresident rate, which is a nice feature for online students that often live in states across the country.

Many online engineering degree choices

There are a total of seven online graduate engineering degrees available at Auburn University, most of which offer further sub-specialities or areas of focus. The engineering degree choices include aerospace, chemical, civil, materials, mechanical, industrial and systems engineering, and computer and software engineering. Each degree is a minimum of 30 credits, and some options will require you to complete a degree thesis. As an applicant you must hold a similar bachelor’s degree in the area of engineering you wish to pursue at the graduate level, but if you have a non-matching but relevant degree background, it can be evaluated on an individual basis.

Graduate certificate available to admitted students

A graduate certificate in occupational safety and ergonomics is available to you if you have been admitted to Auburn’s graduate school. This certificate option complements engineering coursework, and can be an easy way to earn an additional credential while earning elective credits. Certificates can be valuable at the graduate level since it can help you develop or reposition your professional expertise. No matter if you are a degree seeking or a non-degree seeking student, you can earn this certificate in 15 credits, or three classes.

The Bad

Relatively low student engagement ranking

In the most recent U.S. News & World Report publication, Auburn University’s online graduate engineering had a low student engagement score when compared with other top online graduate engineering programs. Student engagement accounts for factors like graduation rates, class size, retention rates, and other related characteristics. It should be noted that Auburn’s student engagement score is still in the top 40 in the nation, but improvement in this area could help take the school the next level.
