Trupanion Review

Trupanion has made a name for themselves in the pet insurance industry by offering flexible policies and some unique coverage options that are hard to find elsewhere. However, their missing wellness protection puts them behind the best companies.

The Good

No limits on benefits

Trupanion pet insurance doesn’t have any annual, lifetime, or per-incident limits on the benefits you receive if your pet gets sick or injured. Very few other companies in the industry offer unlimited benefits to their customers and, while you may never reach some of the limits some other pet insurance providers set, you never know what’s going to happen. A severe injury or illness could end up costing far more than you anticipated once you add up emergency visits, surgeries, medications, and rehabilitative therapy. In situations like these, an unlimited policy may be the only option that gets you the level of coverage you need.

Variety of deductible options

Trupanion lets you choose how much you want to pay for your per-incident deductible or whether you’d like to pay a deductible at all. You can choose any amount from $0 to $1,000 in $5 increments. Most other pet insurance companies give you just three choices and almost none give you the option to not pay a deductible period. Most also don’t offer deductibles as high as $1,000, but for people looking to keep premium costs low, Trupanion could the way to go.

Optional coverage packages available

For those looking to go beyond the basic levels of coverage for their pets, Trupanion offers an Additional Care Package. This covers things like holistic treatments, behavioral therapy, and more advanced treatments like stem cell therapy. The cost of this optional package varies depending on the age of your pet and other factors, so you have to get a quote in order to see how it fits into your budget. Another optional package that Trupanion offers is the Pet Owner Assistance Package. This pays for pet boarding fees as well as advertising and reward money if your pet is lost or stolen. Cremation or burial expenses are also part of this package, which costs less than $5 per month.

Coverage for working pets

Trupanion covers all types of working pets, including search and rescue dogs, hunting dogs, breeding dogs, service dogs, and more. Surprisingly, many other pet insurers do not offer this same level of coverage to their customers, instead requiring all of these costs to be paid out of pocket. Although you do have to pay an additional fee for this type of pet insurance, it may well be worth it if you want to make sure your pet is protected both on and off the job.

The Bad

Limited wellness coverage

Although Trupanion covers fecal screenings for your pet if they’re needed after an injury or illness, that’s about the extent of their wellness and routine care coverage. Services like vaccines, dental cleanings, and spaying/neutering procedures are not covered by Trupanion and there is no way to purchase additional coverage for these treatments. If wellness coverage is of interest to you, you may want to check out a company like Pets Best, which pays for a full range of routine and preventative treatments.

No discounts

Trupanion doesn’t offer you any way to save on your premiums, which could make their policies less affordable to some. Although discounts aren’t all that common among pet insurance companies, most companies usually give some savings to customers that insure multiple pets. If this applies to you, you may be able to get a more affordable policy elsewhere. However, you never really know until you get a quote, so it’s still worth taking a look at what Trupanion has to offer and how much it’ll cost you before you cross them off your list.
