Buy as many minutes as you like
With Straight Talk’s Reserve program, you can buy as many minutes’ or months’ worth of service all at once. This way, you don’t have to worry about your account becoming inactive. If you’re on one of the unlimited plans, your account is refilled when the month is over. Where this service really has value is with the All You Need plan. You can buy extra minutes and choose whether you’d like them to take effect immediately or when your service is up for the month. If you reserve them for later then realize you need it before the end of the month, you can always go into your online account and activate it from there.

Straight Talk’s prepaid customers can choose from all the popular phone brands, including Samsung, LG, Motorola, Apple, BlackBerry, and more. The latest iPhone and Android models are all compatible with Straight Talk, though the high price tag may discourage some from choosing these. There are still plenty more affordable options, though. Straight Talk even has a few feature phones you can get without paying anything. Finally, you also have the choice to bring your own device.

Signing up for a Straight Talk prepaid phone plan is simple to do and shouldn’t take you much time once you’ve decided which phone and service plan you’re interested in. You just pay for what you want, wait for it to come in the mail, and activate your phone online. Enter in your serial number and the PIN on the back of your service card and set up an account on Straight Talk’s website, and you’re all set.
High per-minute rates
Straight Talk’s All You Need plan gives you 1,000 minutes and texts per month for about $30. This comes out to about $0.33 per minute, which is a little on the high end for pay-as-you-go plans. One thing to note, though, is this plan also includes a small data allowance, something that isn’t commonly found with pay-as-you-go plans. When this is figured in, the costs for making a call or sending a text are somewhat lower but, if you have no intention of accessing the web from your phone, you may be able to get a more affordable rate from a company like Net10.
Limited help from live chat
If you’re looking to get a simple question answered, Straight Talk’s live chat should be able to help you out, but you may want to try contacting them by phone instead if you have several questions. When we contacted Straight Talk, their live chat representatives would only answer a single question before directing us to a phone number to call for further assistance. However, this shouldn’t have a large impact on your decision because it’s unlikely that you’ll need to speak to a customer support agent too often.
