5pm Review

5pm leads the industry in task management tools, with a lean application focused primarily on managing tasks with a team. However, looking beyond tasks, 5pm falls short in most other areas of project management.

The Good

Exceptional user interface

The design is clean and the layout is user-friendly. Adding tasks is a breeze, while moving things around and making adjustments is just as easy. Everything you would want to access is all available on one screen, barely a click away.

Easy to use and quick to get started

Getting started with 5pm is as easy as signing up and immediately adding your first task or project. That is the benefit of using an application with a limited feature set. Simplicity is clearly a goal that 5pm has not taken lightly. As you use the product, you can see that they have performed well in this area. For the limited amount of learning that is required, there is a useful one-page guide that 5pm has put together. This pretty much puts the ease of use into perspective, as some project management software solutions will come with 200+ page guides.

Functional ability to track task progress

The application could not be any easier to navigate. The standard view is a two-column layout that is focused on tasks and organized by project. You can see all of your tasks and projects on the left-hand side, while the details of the tasks can be viewed on the right-hand side. The other standout feature with an excellent user experience is the timeline view, which is in the form of a Gantt chart. This is the feature that puts the icing on the cake with regard to 5pm as a leading application for task management.

Strong support forum

A community forum powered by getsatisfaction.com offers a healthy number of posts from other users who have had questions about 5pm. Checking through those posts, you are likely to find the answer to any question you may have. Additionally, if you ask a question yourself, you can expect to hear back from both the 5pm team and the community.

Task importing

You can import a CSV file filled with tasks into 5pm. This makes 5pm a solid option for any users who work with a large volume of tasks. It is much faster to create your tasks and projects within an Excel file, as you can adjust dates and assign tasks very quickly. From there, you can import the file right into 5pm and everything is all set. Projects, tasks, and subtasks all import perfectly.

5pm offers a solid mobile experience for those who want to be able to access project and task data on the go. The mobile app is functional and efficient. However, it is much easier to manage pre-existing tasks from the app than it is to create new ones.

The Bad

Difficulty editing a large volume of tasks

The biggest problem with 5pm’s functionality is that you cannot edit tasks directly within the detail view. It shows all of the details, but in order to edit them, you must click the Edit link. From there, a new window pops up and you can start editing. Additionally, there is no simple way to edit a large volume of tasks quickly and efficiently. If you wanted to change ten tasks, for example, you would have to click on each task individually and make your edits.

Few project management features other than task management

If you want wikis, a central file storage system, financial management tools, or a central discussion area, this is not the right program for you. But if your workflow requires strictly task management, giving 5pm a try is likely worth your time.

File management features are lacking

You can attach files to tasks, but there is no central file management location to access all of your files in one place. You also won’t find any version control features for your files, which is a big setback if you do a lot of file sharing within your project management software.

No true task dependencies

5pm refers to their subtask feature as a dependency. However, a subtask is not a dependency, which is fairly misleading in this case.
