GoToMeeting Review

GoToMeeting places a strong focus on simplifying and enhancing collaboration, making it well suited for a team of employees working with clients. However, larger teams will find it a bit more difficult to get participant feedback.

The Good

Advanced sharing tools make collaboration easy

With GoToMeeting, you’re able to share your entire desktop with your participants or limit sharing to a single application. Pass off control of your computer to another member of your team, as needed. Drawing tools enable you to mark up any document you’ve shared. Speak directly to your team through your computer microphone and make the conversation a little more personal by adding a webcam feed. You can have up to six webcam feeds going at once. Group chat is another option for asking questions or discussing projects, and is a great way to communicate without interrupting the presentation. Private chat is also an option for times when you only need to speak to a particular individual. All of these tools make collaboration between small and large groups very simple and efficient, which is exactly what a good web conferencing software should do.

Host free, instant meetings for small teams

GoToMeeting’s Free plan is designed for up to three participants and doesn’t require you to sign up or download anything to get started. Head over to GoToMeeting’s website and click on the Free plan. You’re automatically brought to a meeting space and given a meeting room link to share with others. Once everyone has joined, sharing files or your computer screen is as simple as clicking the right buttons at the bottom of the screen. There’s no chat function built into this free conference space, but it does connect to your computer microphone and your webcam if you allow it, so communicating with others shouldn’t be a problem. Talk for as long as you need to because there aren’t any limits on how long your meetings can run or how many you can host with the free plan.

Simple to brand your meeting space

The easiest way to customize your GoToMeeting conference space is by uploading a company logo. All you need to do is go into Settings and upload the file; it’s then displayed in the meeting room whenever you’re not sharing your screen. GoToMeeting also gives you the option to change the default colors of the meeting space to fit in with your company’s color scheme. Complete the custom branding of your conference room by creating a unique URL with the name of your company in it. This way, when a client enters your online meeting space, there is no doubt about who they’re working with, and the room will reflect the polished, professional image you want to project.

Plentiful online resources to get up to speed

GoToMeeting provides a number of useful resources designed to assist new users. The best place to start if you’ve got a simple question is their FAQ page, but their knowledge base or user guide is better for more detailed instructions. Video tutorials are also available. These walk you through how to use certain features of the web meeting software, showing you exactly where all the controls are and how to use them. These videos cover everything from how to log in to your account to how to record your meeting to scheduling in Outlook. If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, try posting a question on the company’s active forum. GoToMeeting also offers phone and live chat support for immediate assistance.

The Bad

Limited methods for obtaining participant feedback

There’s no way for attendees to provide feedback through polls or by raising their hands when they have a question during the meeting. These features are pretty standard among most web conferencing services, so it’s a little unusual that GoToMeeting doesn’t offer them. Tools like polls are very useful, particularly in larger meetings, for engaging the audience and encouraging everyone to participate. For smaller meetings, however, polling tools may be unnecessary because it’s easier for everyone to get their chance to speak. If you plan on hosting larger conferences, an online meeting software with more tools for attendee feedback will likely be a better fit.

Must create your own reminders

When you schedule a meeting for a future date, attendees must make a note of it themselves because the software doesn’t send reminder emails. This is more of an inconvenience than a problem, but it’s something to keep in mind when choosing a web conferencing provider. If you’re concerned about attendees forgetting about the meeting, you also have the option of sending out your own reminders from your email, though that requires you to remember to do so.

Can't store shared files

GoToMeeting doesn’t let you save any of the files discussed in your meetings for attendees to download later. This isn’t a critical component of a web conferencing software for most businesses, but if you find your team discusses and shares important project-related documents frequently, a document library is nice to have on your side. If you want a video conferencing solution that offers this, you need to either check out some other services or look into GoToTraining, which is very similar to GoToMeeting except it’s designed more for online education and employee training.
