OnStream Media Review

Onstream Media is the ideal solution for larger organizations who want a flexible web conferencing software for in-house or client meetings. Their customization tools are somewhat basic, considering their standing as a top-tier company, but this shouldn't be a concern for most.

The Good

Great for larger organizations

With Onstream Media, you’re able to host meetings of up to 1,000 people, which is far more than what most video conferencing solutions offer. Most businesses won’t need to hold meetings this large, but if you plan on hosting the occasional webinar or training session through the software, the additional capacity is extremely valuable. Onstream Media meetings give participants several ways to make themselves heard, even in large meetings, such as the ability to raise their hands when they have a question and answer polls to give their opinions. Automated follow-up emails after the meeting help you stay connected to all your attendees, something that’s especially important if you’re working with new clients.

Intuitive user interface

It doesn’t take long to learn how to use Onstream Media’s software, even if you’ve never held an online meeting before. Most of the important controls are listed in the toolbar across the top of the screen. Here, you can find the polling and drawing tools, screen and file sharing options, and the meeting recording buttons. The menu on the righthand side of the screen is where you’re able to manage your participants. Invite or remove people from the meeting, discuss items in group or private chat, and mute noisy attendees. The information you’re sharing is displayed in the large window in the middle of the screen so it’s easy for everyone to see what you’re trying to show them.

Encourage audience participation

Onstream Media gives you the ability to create poll questions during the meeting, which is a valuable way to get feedback on your presentation and to engage your audience. Create your questions before the meeting or on the fly. It’s fairly simple to do so: Just click the Polling button on the toolbar and type your question and the possible answer choices. Choose Save if you don’t want to ask the question right away and Conduct if you do. Once participants begin answering the poll, you see their results coming in and get percentages of how many answered each way. You can then choose to make the results public or to keep them for yourself. Tools like these are extremely useful to have, particularly in larger meetings where it may be difficult for everyone to share their opinion.

Quickly share files with others

Transferring a file from your computer to another participant’s is as simple as right-clicking on their name, selecting Send File, and choosing the one you want. You can also click on All Participants instead of a single name, and everyone is sent the document. Share up to 10 documents with your attendees throughout the meeting. Not all web conferencing services make it possible to transfer files to other participants, and of those that do, few make it as simple as Onstream Media. Businesses that frequently share documents with clients or colleagues are going to find this especially useful because it saves the recipients from having to hunt through their email or log in to their meeting account later to download the files. It’s also possible to download documents after the meeting if you need to.

Advanced recording tools

After you record an Onstream Media meeting, you can edit the videos to highlight just the important parts of the meeting. With edited video, everyone can get straight to the key points of the discussion. While recording capability is a pretty standard feature among web conferencing services, editing tools are rare. Most other software requires you to download your recording and edit it in a separate program, but Onstream Media enables you edit from directly within. Break down the meeting into chapters, if needed, to make it easier for viewers to navigate to the right section. Once you have everything the way you want it to be, simply share it with your colleagues or clients. Another thing that sets Onstream Media apart in terms of their recording technology is that all webcam and video feeds are included in the recording. This isn’t true of all web conferencing services, and it’s definitely something to be appreciated if you want a complete recording of your meeting.

The Bad

Basic customization only

Onstream Media does give you the option to upload your company logo and create a custom URL for your meeting space. However, they are lacking more advanced capabilities, such as the ability to change the colors and layout of the meeting space. This isn’t unusual among web conferencing services, but many of the top-tier products do offer this option to their customers. Given the extensive feature set offered by Onstream Media, it would be nice to see them give consumers the opportunity to adjust the meeting room layout to suit their unique needs. This is most likely not going to be a make-or-break feature for the majority of businesses, though.
