The Hartford and AARP partnered in 1984 and have since expanded coverage options for drivers and homeowners in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In states offered, policies may also include exclusive benefits or discounts that are fairly unique in the industry. The Hartford and AARP Auto Insurance

The Hartford and AARP auto insurance includes the coverage options a driver would expect with most major carriers. More unique coverage options include The Hartford and AARP’s New Car Replacement Coverage. This coverage replaces your new vehicle, if totaled, with a new version of the same make, model, and equipment, without factoring in depreciation. RecoverCare is another unique option available, which pays drivers back for home services you are unable to perform due to an auto accident. Services such as house cleaning, snow removal, or dog walking are a few examples of what might be covered.

Although specific coverage and discounts available may vary in availability for each state, The Hartford offers policies in all 50 states and Washington D.C. Options such as roadside assistance, gap insurance, and transportation expenses are a few examples of coverage add-ons available. Other popular options for customizing your policies include disappearing deductibles and accident forgiveness.

Strengths: The Hartford not only offers a full breadth of coverage options, but the customer service ratings are among the best and highest in the industry. Based on the J.D. Power scores and A+ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best, The Hartford and AARP is highly rated by third-party agencies for auto insurance.

Restrictions: To be a member with AARP, you must be 50 years of age or older. Although numerous coverages are offered, including classic car and RV insurance, The Hartford does not offer SR-22 or similar form types for high-risk drivers. In addition, not all coverage or discount options are available in all states or to all policyholders, so contacting an agent is necessary to determine which you may qualify for in your area.

Discounts: Not all discounts are available in all states, but on the whole, The Hartford and AARP provide numerous auto insurance discounts. AARP members receive a discount simply for being a member, plus bundling discounts for purchasing more than one policy through The Hartford and AARP. If you pay in full or with an automatic draft, or drive a new vehicle, you may be eligible for further savings.

The Hartford and AARP Home Insurance

The Hartford and AARP home insurance policies offered include standard options and multiple add-ons for more comprehensive coverage and financial protection. Standard policies include dwelling coverage, other structures coverage, personal property, loss of use, liability coverage, and medical payments.

The add-on options available for rounding out your home insurance coverage also stand out among other companies. If you need higher coverage limits, for example, you may also have the option to purchase full replacement coverage, up to 150%, where available.

Other add-ons options may include:

  • “New for Old” protection — replace old items with new ones of the same value.
  • Personal injury liability
  • Replacing locks reimbursement
  • Identity fraud expense reimbursement
  • Disappearing deductible
  • Equipment breakdown coverage
  • Valuable items
  • Green rebuilding coverage
  • Replacement Plus
  • Water backup and sump pump coverage
  • Scheduled personal property

Strengths: The amount of coverage choices for homeowners is one of the most unique aspects of The Hartford home insurance. The Superior rating from AM Best illustrates the financial strength of The Hartford, and is an important factor for homeowners to consider when selecting policies.

Restrictions: The number of discounts are somewhat limited compared to other home insurance carriers. And while The Hartford scores among the highest with J.D. Power for auto insurance, the same is not true for homeowners insurance. The Hartford scores 798 out of 1,000 — almost last among carriers — for the 2021 J.D. Power Homeowners insurance customer satisfaction survey.

Discounts: Discounts offered for The Hartford and AARP homeowners policies include those for bundling, home security system, retiree credits, and being claims-free.
