Farmers Motorcycle Insurance Review

Farmers is one of the country’s largest insurers of small businesses, homes, and, yes, vehicles. Amongst their vast repertoire of insurance and financial services products is their motorcycle insurance. Not only does it offer coverage for classic and custom bikes, but coverage for a variety of scenarios therein. In addition to standard collision coverage, you can get accessory coverage for all of the custom changes you’ve made to your bike. It’s also very easy to file a claim with Farmers.

The claim

Farmers Insurance promises to provide quality coverage, convenience, and personalized service. This extends well beyond home their more popular products like home and life insurance into motorcycle coverage, as well. It boasts a variety of packages for a variety of motorcyclists and their bikes. Whether it’s an antique or a tricked out custom job, Farmers has something for you.

Is it true?

For the most part, yes.

In terms of the promised convenience that Farmers boasts about, the overall customer satisfaction rating seemed to suggest differently. In J.D. Power’s most recent customer satisfaction survey, customer satisfaction ranked Farmers 4th out of 24 providers.

This is a major increase from its 18th place ranking the previous year. Its score of 874 (on a 1,000-point scale) is 13 points above the industry average. On the flip side, Farmers does have a low 1.5-star rating from customers posting on the Better Business Bureau, generally indicating a slow response time for claims.

However, the company does offer a variety of coverage packages for motorcyclists. Not only are its plans broken up based on monetary amounts, but some packages made concessions for bikes that were deemed vintage (at least 25 years old and maintained or restored to original condition). There are also options for custom bikes with $30,000 worth of coverage for one-of-a-kind accessories and equipment.

Product Overview

Best for

Motorcyclists who want a variety of coverage options including extensive plans for collectors and custom bikes.

Not for

Anyone looking for a more streamlined handling of the repairs process and greater peace of mind.

Features

Comprehensive motorcycle coverage

Farmers motorcycle insurance provides collision and comprehensive coverage as part of their standard motorcycle insurance coverage. While collision coverage takes care of any damages that happen as the direct result of an accident, comprehensive coverage is very useful to have in case your bike is damaged by fire, vandalism, or some other non-collision-related event.

Agents in all 50 states

Nothing beats speaking to an agent in person and Farmers makes that even easier. The company has agents in all 50 states. So, no matter where you are and whether you’re an avid motorcyclist or a collector – you’ll be able to find an agent when you need one.

File a claim easily

Farmers motorcycle insurance policyholders have access to a 24/7 claims center, so if an accident happens and you do need to file a claim, you can be confident that it will be handled quickly. Farmers gives you a number of options to file a claim, including online, over the phone (or the Farmers iClaim app), and through a local agent.

Custom and classic motorcycle coverage

Farmers motorcycle insurance also covers custom and classic bikes, which is unique. Because these types of motorcycles are generally much more expensive than your average bike, few motorcycle insurance companies are willing to risk covering them. You can also add on extra coverage and even take on Replacement Cost Total Loss Settlement coverage, which ensures you get paid the full value even if your bike is totaled.

Possible drawbacks

Spotty online quote availability

Farmers claims to offer the option of online quoting. However, this feature seems restricted to certain areas. If you are not living in an area where online quoting is an option, you will need to call in for a complete quote or speak with an agent directly. Farmers does have a tool to help connect you with a local agent, but if you’re just shopping around, an online quote tool would be much more convenient.

Lack of supplemental materials

Farmers offers some great coverage policies and discounts, it would just be nice if the website provided some learning materials to go along with it. Motorcyclists, whether they are casual riders or die-hard collectors, need to know more about the coverage options in detail to make an informed decision. As it stands, there’s a little bit of a learning curve to understanding what some of these discounts and policies entail.

Farmers Insurance vs. Markel American

Markel claims to specialize in motorcycle coverage. When stacked up against Farmers, Markel does have more coverage options. However, Farmers offers far more savings options, including discounts for multiple policies and time implementing safety measures.

Farmers Insurance vs. Progressive

Both cover antique and custom bikes and they also offer a plethora of discounts. However, one place that they both differ tremendously is in overall price. Progressive claims it can cover your bike with insurance rates as low as $75 per year. This, however, is the price for a bare-minimum policy.

Farmers Insurance vs. Nationwide

There are more coverage options with Farmers than you’ll find with Nationwide. However, Farmers did not offer much in the way of policies geared specifically toward high-risk drivers (younger motorcyclists operating high-speed bikes).
