Lorex specializes in video surveillance, offering numerous high definition camera packages for small and large homes and businesses. The company entered the security market in 1991 with the mission of bringing innovative solutions to the industry.

Homeowners can choose between a variety of surveillance systems, including wired, wireless and Wi-Fi cameras. Although Lorex offers superior video equipment, systems are designed for outdoor protection and don’t provide some standard indoor monitoring devices. Lorex security systems are best for homeowners and business owners who only need video surveillance.

Lorex security systems cater to all budgets and homes. Based on our Lorex security cameras reviews the 4K HD 8-Channel Security System is affordably priced and provides the perfect video surveillance for an apartment or attached condominium.

The eight-camera 2K 8-Channel IP Security System and 4K Ultra HD 16 Channel Security System can monitor mid-sized and large properties with front and back yards.

Lorex’s 4K Ultra HD IP 16-channel NVR System provides the greatest protection. The kit includes eight outdoor cameras and an NVR that can store up to 3 TB of data. But the cameras excel with their night vision technology. In low-light conditions, the cameras can capture color video and can record infrared black and white video, with a range of 130 feet, in total darkness.

Lorex Prices

Lorex offers reasonably priced surveillance systems, but competitors such as Brinks sell packages starting as low as $200. Lorex doesn’t offer financing options, but you can purchase a system online using a credit card or Paypal account. Orders over $100 receive free shipping

Equipment purchased directly from Lorex comes with a two-year warranty, which you can extend for three or five years. If you’re not satisfied, you can return your equipment within 30 days of delivery.

Ease of Use

If you have the proper tools and a little DIY experience, you should have no problems installing a Lorex security system. Wired systems require you to attach each camera to a DVR or NVR system. NVR systems also require you to attach an Ethernet cable. Wi-Fi cameras connect wirelessly to your home’s Wi-Fi network. You can access any type of Lorex security cameras using the Lorex mobile app.

Lorex Types of Installation

Professional Installation

All Lorex security systems come in self-install kits. However, Lorex has partnered with InstallNet to provide professional installation upon request. Most Lorex security systems are hardwired, requiring an installer to mount cameras with anchors and screws and drill through walls to run cables from the cameras to the recorder. Typically, professional installation costs around $150 to $200 per camera.

Pros

  • Ensures proper installation
  • You don’t need tools
  • Saves time

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Requires drilling through walls to run cables
  • Must schedule time for an appointment

DIY Installation

All Lorex self-install kits come with mounting anchors and screws, power adaptors and 60 feet of cable per camera. You must have basic tools, including screwdrivers, a drill and a ladder. Since wired cameras require drilling through walls to run cables to the recorder, you should have some construction experience to avoid drilling through electrical cables or plumbing.

Pros

  • No labor costs
  • No appointment required

Cons

  • Requires tools
  • Must have DIY experience

Lorex Types of Monitoring

Lorex doesn’t offer a professional monitoring service. Security systems include an NVR or DVR, which record video from all installed cameras. Wi-fi cameras also feature microSD cards for capturing video.

You can access live and recorded video using the Lorex mobile app, available for Android and Apple devices. The app enables you to see video from one camera at a time or in a split screen with all cameras. Some systems include up to 10 gigabytes of free cloud storage, with two-day video backup.

Additional Benefits

  • DIY installation: After purchasing your security system on the Lorex website, you’ll receive a self-install kit that includes all the hardware and cable needed to mount your cameras and connect them to the recording device. You can also choose professional installation by contacting InstallNet, Lorex’s installation partner.
  • Quality video: All Lorex cameras capture high-definition video, ranging in resolution from 1080p to 4K. Lorex recording devices feature 2 TB to 3 TB hard drives to store recorded video. Some systems allow you to expand storage up to 8 TB.
  • Night vision: All Lorex security packages include cameras that feature night vision technology. The most economical four-camera package features infrared night vision with a range of up to 150 feet. Advanced systems include cameras equipped with color night vision technology, along with long-range infrared night vision for low-light image recording.

Additional Drawbacks

  • No professional monitoring: Lorex doesn’t offer professional monitoring. The Lorex mobile app enables you to remotely access your cameras and view recorded video, as well as set up push notifications. However, professional monitoring provides greater protection, because monitoring agents are equipped to quickly notify emergency services.
  • Cloud storage: Some Lorex packages include up to 10 GB of free cloud storage. However, the storage plan only backs up your video for up to two days, a much shorter period than other home security companies. For example, Ring’s video recording plans enable you to access saved videos for up to 60 days.
  • Limited equipment: Lorex security systems only provide video surveillance. Systems lack many of the devices that homeowners need, like door and window sensors and indoor motion detectors.

The Bottom Line

Lorex offers excellent video surveillance systems, with high definition security cameras equipped with night vision technology. You can choose between wired and wireless systems. The cameras can be monitored remotely using the Lorex mobile app. However, Lorex doesn’t provide professional monitoring or other basic home security equipment, like indoor motion detectors or door and window sensors. If you only need video surveillance, Lorex offers high quality equipment that can stand up to the elements. But if you’re looking for more comprehensive security, with professional monitoring, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
