NJM Insurance is an unbeatable choice for auto insurance if you live in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Connecticut. In J.D. Power’s 2019 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Survey, NJM earned 5-stars for overall satisfaction, ranking as one of the top insurance companies on the list.

NJM offers comprehensive coverage, including a range of add-on policies for added protection. Policyholders can get new car replacement coverage, roadside assistance, gap insurance, rental car and rideshare reimbursement, and even pet insurance.

Because NJM is a regional company, you can count on getting top-notch customer service. In fact, according to its website, an impressive 93% of NJM’s customers renew their policy every year.

When it comes to discounts, NJM also stands out. Drivers can save money on their premium by taking a defensive driving course, carrying full insurance coverage, paying their premium in full, insuring a new car and more.

The only major downside to NJM is that the company only sells auto insurance in three states, which is an extremely small market.

NJM Insurance: Financial Strength, Availability, and History

Overall, NJM has a good reputation in the industry, despite its very small coverage area. The company has an A+ rating from AM Best, which indicates superior financial strength. When it comes to customer reviews, the results are mixed. NJM has an average 4.8/5 star rating from TrustPilot, but it has a B- rating from the BBB, which is lower than many other insurance companies.

The Auto Insurance Factors We Analyzed

Pricing

According to 2021 data from Bankrate.com, the average cost of NJM auto insurance is $370 per year for minimum coverage and $1,271 per year for full coverage. However, it’s important to remember that auto insurance premiums are highly personalized.

Many different factors are considered when an insurance provider calculates your rate. Some factors are out of your control, like your age, driving history and state. Others you can control, like the amount of coverage you purchase and your deductible. Ultimately, every driver will pay a different insurance premium based on their unique circumstances.

Customer experience

We also reviewed NJM’s customer experience ratings from leading research groups. In J.D. Power’s 2019 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Survey, NJM earned 5-stars for overall satisfaction. The company also got a perfect 5-star rating in J.D. Power’s 2019 U.S. Auto Insurance Study for the Mid-Atlantic region. If you’re shopping for auto insurance, it’s important to look for excellent customer experience and service.

To apply for coverage with NJM, you can use the online quote tool or call an agent. All documents are available online or through your customer dashboard if you need to file a claim. It’s also easy to get in touch with an agent through phone or email if you have questions about your policy.

Coverage

Overall, NJM offers reliable auto insurance coverage. The company offers basic coverages, including collision, comprehensive, liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist and medical payments coverage. However, they don’t provide any coverages that are especially unique or different from competing insurance providers.

If you’re buying auto insurance for the first time, it can be helpful to talk with an NJM agent to ensure you’re purchasing the right coverage and the right amount of coverage. To determine how much liability coverage you need, consider the value of your assets, like IRAs, retirement accounts, investment real estate properties and even your savings account. The more assets you have, the more liability coverage you’ll need.

Deals, discounts, and add-ons

NJM offers a variety of discounts to help drivers lower their premiums. For instance, drivers can save money by taking a defensive driving class, setting up autopay, purchasing a full coverage policy, being a good student, bundling home and auto insurance and paying their premium in full.

Additionally, NJM sells several endorsement coverages. Some examples of available add-on coverages include pet insurance, roadside assistance, transportation reimbursement coverage and new car replacement coverage. While NJM offers good endorsements, their coverage options aren’t necessarily better or more extensive than its competitors. For instance, NJM doesn’t provide coverage for luxury cars, mobile homes or RVs.

The Bottom Line

Based on our evaluation, NJM is a great insurance company across the board. It offers good coverage options, a wide range of endorsements, and discounts that can help you save money on your premium. Additionally, we like that the company has great financial strength, and excellent ratings from leading research firms, like J.D. Power.

The biggest drawback to NJM is that the company only sells auto insurance policies to drivers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. But if you live in one of those states, NJM has you covered. We recommend NJM to drivers who value customer service, even if they have to pay a little more for their insurance.

Methodology

We evaluated NJM based on discounts, coverage, online resources, financial strength, and customer satisfaction to create our best car insurance reviews. To compare car insurance companies with other providers across the board, we analyzed:

  • Discounts: Auto insurance companies that advertised more discounts received higher scores in our methodology.
  • Financial Stability: Reviews.com utilized AM Best ratings to assign a score based on each car insurance company’s financial stability.
  • Customer Satisfaction: J.D. Power ranks car insurance companies by customer satisfaction, so we used its 2021 Auto Insurance Satisfaction Study to compare the average rating of insurers across all regions.
  • Coverage: Car insurance companies were awarded higher scores for advertised coverages beyond the body liability, property liability, collision, and personal injury protection.
  • Online Resources: We reviewed the digital resources of each car insurance company and awarded higher scores to insurers with mobile claim estimates, digital insurance cards, and more.

Reviews.com reviews products, services and companies based on five criteria to help readers understand how companies compare based on similar metrics. For the best car insurance companies, our editorial team compared affordability, customer support, coverage options, customer satisfaction scores and online resources from each company to determine top providers.

As for average pricing, we used Bankrate.com’s data of car insurance, based on the profiles of a 40-year male and female. For full coverage, the details used were the following:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2019 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.
